Further to my earlier post (3) following Matt's excellent review I have now had the opportunity to watch this film for the first time. I enjoyed seeing it but it didn't have the same emotional impact for me as for some of the other posters (and my wife's mother is from a Welsh mining community). I don't think I would watch it again so therefore will not be buying the Blu-ray.

For what it's worth I don't think the Academy have any wisdom (ref Hitchcock) and for me Citizen Kane is the superior film.

I have seen both films in excellent 35mm presentations, HGWMV in a pristine nitrate print that was beautiful beyond words.
I have always admired and been dazzled by Kane's brilliance, but it reminds me of a cold jewel, perhaps a priceless diamond.
HGWMV never fails to move me. There's an emotional connection that eludes Kane.
Both are great films in their own fashion.
