I was wondering if you have a set top box like the samsung sir-ts160 or the like with a selectable output. Say you select 1080i to watch hdtv what happens when you then go watch program thats not 1080i do I have to go flip the switch on the back of the stb to watch 480i then.

Depends on the box, and the settings available on the box. In most cases it would convert everything, including 480i programs, to the output mode you select, 1080i.

I have the Samsung TS 160 and I leave it on 1080i. I do not have to adjust the switch when watching non HDTV programming. I've had my box for a little less than a month and I love it. Great user interface, program guide, HDTV quality is awesome and it doesn't run too hot.
