Good movie! A shame they couldn't (or didn't) include supplemental content...wasn't this the movie they re-shot and re-cast, then put on the shelf for a couple of years before it ultimately came out?

Yes. Wenders has pretty much disowned it. Even the books about him don't even bother going into much detail about the film since it isn't really his. Producer Coppola took it over and re-edited it.

I have an Australian DVD of it, didn't realize it was getting a US release. Will have to pick it up.

Hadn't heard of the film Hammett (1982) until a few weeks ago when a listing appeared on the BBFC for a DVD release from Studio Canal. The UK release date for this title is Monday 7th November. Below is front cover artwork (source: Play.com):
