I've read the showrunner interviews following the finale. And AV Club reviews of the season conclusion. No indications of being forced to prolong and short season. It seems intentional.
I think it was a mis-step in story-telling. Episode 8 was a powerful and natural ending to the season. As with Season 2 to 3, it would have fit form to jump forward in time to start Season 4. But jumping after the incredible 8th episode to start a whole new story, it didn't make sense to me. It didn't work emotionally.
