Every time I watch this, I find the trash-talk scene with Joker and Mother incredibly jarring.. Their back and forth is so unfunny and the reactions of their audience so overblown ("Well, they call me 'the joker'.. LOL!! Oh no he didn't!! LOLOLOL HAhahahaha!!), that I have to ask - is it some clever statement by Kubrick that is going over my head?

Compared with the dialogue in the rest of the film, it is weird and takes me out of the movie..

When this movie was having its theatrical release at the mall Cineplex in my home town, it was playing at the same time as a g rated film in the second theatre. Their marquee read:

Now Playing:
Full Metal
Benji. (!)

Yes that scene comes across as infantile compared to the intensity of the rest of the film.

Ok, so it's not just me? It's not some Kubrickian wink at something?

I wouldn't say it's infantile, just odd, especially compared with the rest (ok, the Papa-ooma-mow-mow surfin' bird scene bugged me, too... 'Who will play the indians?')..

I have the book in storage so I can’t refer to it now, but you might want to check out author/screenwriter Michael Herr’s reminiscence on workout with Kubrick on the film. If memory serves, it went into pretty good detail about the choices they made and the reasons behind them. It might have been referenced in there. Sorry I don’t have it handy.
