my experience so far was on my macbook by opening the old HBOmax app & it switched automatically over. from what i previously read, this would happen, but when i opened the app on my ATV, the old app just opened.

as Mr. Crawford mentioned above, perhaps i’ll also leave it as is until some of the kinks are worked out.

did anyone find the ATV app enable the new Max on its own?
I went back to that ATV unit that only had HBO Max on it and the app wouldn't load so I was forced to download the Max app on that unit. However, that ATV unit won't play any 4K material with HDR too now. So both of my 4KATV units are out of commission when it comes to 4K/Dolby Vision programming on Max. However, I have Ultra Roku units in each HT location and they play 4K/Dolby Vision programming just fine.

spoke too soon about waiting out for any issues. once i re-opened the old HBOMax app, it prompted me to download the Max app.
it's actually not bad; it seems cleaner. who knows how well it'll work, but i was able to scrub thru Shazam with the Apple remote.

however, the addtion of the Discovery-related content does tarnish the overall look. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I find that hard to believe about Avatar: The Way of the Water:

The ad-free tier will feature enhanced formats, including 60 fps content, while boasting atmospheric audio. Subscribers can stream original content, including “Succession,” “The Undoing,” the “Watchmen” series, “Sharp Objects” and “Chernobyl,” among others. Warner Bros. movies include Dune, Don’t Worry Darling, Joker and Avatar: The Way of Water in 4K UHD, HDR 10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos beginning June 7.

How about this tidbit:

Additionally, all Warner Bros. movies released this year and going forward will be available in 4K UHD when they arrive on Max following their theatrical windows.

By the way, I just watched the first episode of the great HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon" in 4K/Dolby Vision and Atmos.

Guys,

If you see the 4K/UHD designate under a title, but without mentioning HDR or Dolby Vision then it's perhaps in 4K. However, it's without any type of HDR. Examples being Lawrence of Arabia, From Here to Eternity and The Bridge on the River Kwai.

OK, I suspect what's happening is simply that their ATV4K app is not applying match DR (and match frame rate)... as also pointed out in that article.

Since most/all(?) of us typically use that setting to apply proper (H)DR and otherwise default to SDR, that combined w/ the bug mentioned in the article would naturally yield no HDR in that app... unless one changes the default/current ATV4K setting, which I just tried and verified to be the case.

So currently, until Warner fixes the bug, you'd need to manually set the ATV4K output format yourself to get the correct/desired output when using the Max app.

But notice the issue isn't only w/ the DR, but also w/ frame rate though nobody here seems to have noticed the incorrect frame rate over here so far (until I just checked)...

Also 4K HDR IS working on my legacy grandfathered in linear HBO Subcscriber account.

Well, that's good. I haven't tried getting into Max yet.

I am amazed and saddened about the moves being made by HBO to its streaming service.

First, the fact that the iconic HBO is being removed from the name of the service.

Secondly, another price tier is being added to gouge those who want 4k playback. However, nothing new as Netflix has been doing this for some time now.

I've seen one opinion on-line that suggests this is a good thing. While the HBO brand has a lot of positive cachet, the writer of the opinion suggests that if that brand was kept, it might be tarnished by the "reality" dreck that Discovery+ will be bringing to the new service.

None of those settings changes worked for me. Hell, to begin with this morning, the Max app on my ATV4K unit lost my account information and I had to delete the app and reinstall it again. After doing all that, I tried those setup changes you recommended and still no HDR. I then checked my Roku Ultra unit and no issues playing back programming with HDR. Furthermore, they didn't lose my account information like my ATV4K unit.

The bugs are still alive with Max and ATV units.

I briefly tried one 4K / DV film on my Roku Ultra (Batman Begins), and it played back properly. I haven't tried accessing the service with my 1st Gen ATV4K, yet. Honestly, I have been using the Roku Ultra most of the time lately, as it's been working better.

Not sure what you tried, but basically, I had to manually change the main Video Format from 4K/60 SDR, my previous/normal default, to 4K/23.96 HDR or 4K/24 HDR (under Other Formats) for watching HDR films in the new Max app... and switch to 4K/23.96 SDR or 4K/24 SDR for SDR films in it... and then switch again for video sourced content (probably 4K/59.94 whether SDR or HDR).

Yes, real pain in the butt to have to do that, so hopefully, they fix this asap so the match frame rate and DR settings will work again for their app. In the meantime, I may just avoid watching anymore HDR content on there... unless it's actually about to be removed from the service soon...

And yes, I left match frame rate and DR settings enabled as before (since other apps still work just fine w/ them).

This article confirms that Max uses a custom player and not the tvOS player, so functions related to dynamic range and frame rate matching are not working on the Apple TV. This also affects audio features, like "Reduce Loud Sounds."

About the homegrown player on Apple TV, what’s the saying? Those who forget their history are doomed or destined to repeat it. 😞

I tried all of those settings and while using my ATV unit, the Dolby Vision signal wouldn't activate on my LG OLED. No problem seeing the Dolby Vision signal come on my OLED using the Roku Ultra unit.

Are you sure HDR is activated on your display. What model is your display?

Yeah, those of us that only have ATV are screwed so far with this Max app when it comes to 4K/UHD programming.

Also, it's still going to be interesting to see if they try to charge us the extra four dollars for 4K/UHD programming. I'll be pissed considering I'm a DirecTV Premier subscriber.
