DonaldB - are there any more details about the 5/25 release of A Matter of Life and Death (aka Stairway to Heaven)? Is this a Region 1 release? Thanks.

Rod, this is a Region 1 DVD, but I haven't found anything about it other than a release date and studio.

RE: A Matter of Life and Death
Barrie Maxwell first reported this release was on its way from Columbia nearly a year ago, in his Digital Bits column:
I have the R2 Carlton release (a good transfer of elements which have seen better days), so I'm anxious to see if CTHE has topped it. Some extras would be nice, but Columbia hasn't been very generous with many of their older films (e.g. The Awful Truth, Only Angels Have Wings, In a Lonely Place ...), so I'm not optimistic.

The documentary Krzysztof Kieslowski: I'm So-So... will now be included on a fourth disc in the upcoming UK Three Colours box set. It's not presently slated to be released on its own, which is unfortunate, as I'm sure most of us who are interested in the trilogy already bought the individual discs when they came out a couple of years ago.
Please write to [email protected] with your encouragement to have it made available separately.

DonaldB - I've emailed AE suggesting they do some kind of mail in offer where you could get the disc in just a plastic wallet to save them printing sleeves, buying cases etc.
One more discs for the database too (it's already out):
The Basque Ball (La Pelota Vasca) (Julio Medem, Spain) [R2-Spain]
It's avaialble in a standard 1 disc edition (the theatrical version) and a 3 disc set which is actually a far large doumentary on the basque region.
Another thing to add is that the BFI's upcoming disc of Bunuel's Un Chien Andalou will be a double feature of the two Bunuel/Dali films, with L'Age d'Or featuring alongside it.

5 points to anyone who can figure out who owns the rights to Before the Rain either domestically or foreign. It was a Polygram title formerly, but I can't figure/find out who owns the rights now. Sadly, even the director couldn't help me out.

thanks!!

According to reviews at the time of its theatrical release Before The Rain was distributed in the US by Gramercy.

Ted, thanks. So, did USA Films get all of Gramercy's stuff including Before the Rain? Does USA Films still exist? Or, is that Focus Features now and who can I contact there?

**I talked to someone in cust serv at Universal. They said the film was not in their database. They distribute Focus Features stuff.

MGM is another possibility for "Before the Rain". They acquired a number of Polygram/USA/Gramercy titles a few years ago. Lion's Gate/Artisan have a few former Polygram titles as well.
