I didn't go through the list with a fine tooth comb, but I did notice that Killer's Kiss is listed only for laser and DVD, but it's also offered on Blu-ray as a 1080p bonus feature in Criterion's set for The Killing. I only remember this because I reviewed it four years ago.



Just noticed another one: Warner Archive released Out of the Past on Blu-ray some months ago.

The Mask Of Dimitrios, one of my favorite films, struggled to get a Warner Archive DVD release because the elements were in such bad shape. The chances of it coming out on Blu-ray must be slim.

Ambler's novel is excellent. I've always wanted to see this film.

Ambler's novel is excellent. I've always wanted to see this film.

See the movie! It is available via the Warner Archive (and on Amazon) and it is worth owning because you will want to watch it again. I don't really recall the quality of the television showings of it but the consensus seems to be that the Archive disc is the best the film has ever looked and sounded. If you have seen and liked Mr. Arkadin you'll greatly enjoy The Mask of Dimitrios.

Secret Beyond the Door is out on Blu & DVD from Olive. Blast of Silence, Night and the City, Thieves' Highway, & Pickup on South Street will likely be Criterion upgrades when the time comes.

Likely perhaps, but I'm not counting on them until they're announced. Criterion has hundreds of titles to upgrade and they've never said they'll get to all of them.

Ambler's novel is excellent. I've always wanted to see this film.

The film follows the novel very closely. In the final, climactic scene, there is a very small difference which is an improvement.


There are no major stars in the film but a whole array of excellent character actors whose faces would have been very familiar to film-goers of the 1940s. Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet are perfectly cast. Zachary Scott is superb as the villainous Dimitrios.

My grail-noir is "The Devil Thumbs a Ride".

I believe there are rights issues; there have been rights issues for several years - apparently, even preventing showings on TCM, much less a physical media release.

I couldn't agree more on "Devil Thumbs a Ride". It was of the funniest, most insane film noir movies of all time. Anybody who likes Quentin Tarantino will love this film! I dubbed a copy off an old VHS print that was double billed with another film.

I didn't go through the list with a fine tooth comb, but I did notice that Killer's Kiss is listed only for laser and DVD, but it's also offered on Blu-ray as a 1080p bonus feature in Criterion's set for The Killing. I only remember this because I reviewed it four years ago.



Just noticed another one: Warner Archive released Out of the Past on Blu-ray some months ago.

Right you are, Matt. In fact, I reviewed the Blu-ray of Out of the Past, but I forgot to update my list. And I do have Killer's Kiss on BD as well. I gave my DVD to a friend as a gift.

Actually there is an appendix which lists 50 additional films, and The Devil Thumbs a Ride is one of them. Maybe I should add those 50 to the list.
