I'm looking forward to a pair of Criterion releases this year:

And would love to see more Film Noir come to blu-ray. Here are three from Warner Brothers I'd love to see:

Are there Noirs you would like to see on blu-ray?

Don't get me started. The list is long and distinguish starting with The Big Sleep which is reportedly coming soon.

I know what you mean, Robert. I know I'm suggesting three lesser known films in the opening post and there are obviously some glaring omissions that are much better known but it seems to me that for whatever reason the lesser known works often end up coming out first.

That's the kind of thing I fear, Robin. I know it is probably not a film a lot of people know but restored and presented on blu-ray I think it would find a lot of people that would be very happy to get to know it.

There are many noirs I would like on Blu-ray, a few I haven't seen mentioned are Narrow Margin, Crime Wave, Tension, The Killers, and Pushover.


There are also many neo noirs I would like on Blu-ray, starting with Le Samourai, Palmetto, Romeo is Bleeding, Charley Varrick, Madigan, and the Laughing Policeman. Somewhere I read that Twilight Time will be releasing Devil In A Blue Dress this year, which is a great neo noir. I hope that is factual and not a rumour.

Where can I get Lost Weekend!?

Lost Weekend on Blu-ray is available in Europe but it is region B/2, so you would need a region free player to watch it.

Yep The Lost Weekend is one of my all-time favorites and has been out for a couple of years from Masters of Cinema Region B ( see here). Great reason to go region free.

As for noir I'd really like to see on Blu, add Nightmare Alley to those listed here.

I believe there are rights issues; there have been rights issues for several years - apparently, even preventing showings on TCM, much less a physical media release.

Being somewhat new to appreciate the noir classics, I don't have a exhaustive list. But a few I'd definitely like to see on well-done Blu:


Key Largo (1948): Perhaps as part of the hopefully coming Humphrey Bogart Collection, Volume 2.


The Big Clock (1948): Have it on DVD. Release this on Blu right along with the 1987 remake No Way Out (wish Ray Milland would have been around for a cameo in this one, he died the year before No Way Out was released) Would love to see a extra included of Ray Milland as he appeared in this film and his well-done supporting role 30 years later as Sire Yiri in Battlestar Galactica TOS. (1978)


The Big Sleep (1946): Again as part of a Humphrey Bogart Collection, Volume 2. Note that both Key Largo and The Big Sleep also feature Lauren Bacall.


Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982): I agree, it counts.

Yep The Lost Weekend is one of my all-time favorites and has been out for a couple of years from Masters of Cinema Region B ( see here). Great reason to go region free.

Or go here for the steelbook version, which I have. I bought it a couple of years ago, along with the UK steelbook of Double Indemnity and the UK non-steelbook Touch of Evil. I guess for some reason I assumed The Lost Weekend came out here in region A when the other two did.

Here's the listing from Eureka!/Masters of Cinema's website. Seriously, I can't think of a better reason than this to take the plunge into region-free bliss.
