I wanted to upgrade to HDTV with Dish Network but found out that their HD 811 receiver does not record programs
is there any way I can record satellite programming with a DVD recorder?

A DVD recorder will record anything in Standard Definition (480i). Dish does have a Tivo-like HD recorder that goes for about a grand.
