Following the house rules is not the best way to go but is a good base to start from.
As stated above there are grids out there that give you a break down of what to do and when. Counting cards is difficult if not impossible considering the amount of the deck/s the house buries.
Very Basic
-The main advantage the house has is that they get to go last. Basically they are hoping that you are going to bust before they even play their cards.
-Your ability to take advantage of the house (when they have bad cards) is to double down, split, & not pull cards when the dealer has bad ones and you could bust).
-Stick with a betting strategy. Just because you lose 3 hands in a row DOESNT mean that you bet big on hand 4 because you have got to win sometime.(you will lose fast for sure)
-Never set a time limit on yourself (I am going to gamble for 4 hours, etc) set a money limit and when you hit that limit either positive or negative WALK AWAY.
-Always be prepared to walk away from a bad table. If everyone is losing don’t assume its gotta get better sooner or later. Change tables and look around for a hot table that is winning. It’s a lot more fun when everyone gets into it.
Personal Rule but not a bad one:
-If everyone at the table is having fun and you are kicking the houses ass, If they come up and switch decks get your ass up, tell them how disgusted you are with them and leave immediately.
Always assume that the card down on the dealer is a value of 10. 30.7% of the decks are a value of 10. So if the dealer has a 7 or higher showing you need to hit till you get to 17+. If you don’t get to 17 then basically you have a losing hand. When you hit anything over 17 (assuming you haven’t busted) Stay.
If the dealer has a 3,4,5, or 6 showing and you can bust by taking a card DONT take a damn card. If you bust you lose automatically even if the dealer busts. If you have 13 and the dealer busts you win.
Always split
8's and A's
Never split a winning hand IE (2) 9's or 10's. (Don’t get greedy).
Double down anytime you have an 11 (remember 30.7% of the time you will get 21).
The rest of the rules get a little more complicated depending on what the dealer has showing and what you have in your hand, especially in regards to doubling down.
(**Note that these rules are for people that CANNOT count cards in any way.) Best of luck at the casinos boys but remember the house always has the advantage ;)

House always wins. 60/40 is the best odds you will get overall. EX: Roulette, you bet on red thinking you have a 50/50 chance, not true, you forgot about the 0 and 00 green.

Eventually 60/40 is the best you will do. sure, you may win a $1,000,000 jackpot but eventually if you keep playing you will lose.

I don't know why craps always gets overlooked. I know it looks crazy, but once you get it figured out, you will have the best odds there if you know what you are doing. The only problem is you have to have some cash, say $300-500 ready to go, you have to be able covering your losses to go down for a while until things pick back up. Not quite like blackjack where if you want you can sit down with $50 and play. Craps is a hell of a rollercoaster, but it's great!

Well in a game of chance that is of course true, and in all other games it's 99% true. But in Blackjack, Poker, Baccarat, etc a truly astute player can beat the house. Maybe not every time but enough that the odds start to turn in their favor. Poker is an excellent example, the house doesn't even play, they just take a percentage from every hand.

I wrote my Undergrad thesis on evaluating a players skill at Blackjack. I did learn a lot about strategies for playing blackjack and some of them get very complicated. I ended up writeing a program that if I could use while at a table I could walk away richer then if I sat down. Since using Statistics you can know exactly what your odds of winning (thus the value in counting cards). Too bad I'm sure the casinos wouldn't let you sit there and push buttons on your palm pilot as you play :D

I recommend getting "Hoyle's Casino" for the PC. A lot of fun and the tutorial mode is great for beginners. Lots of different poker games, Black Jack, craps, slots, video poker and more. Great fun, and useful for practicing for the real thing.

Just got back from Vegas last night. Had a great time, and actually came out ahead on the gaming. :)
Agreed on Craps. You can lose a lot very quickly, but if you've got the funds to ride it out, you can win a lot very quickly, as well. My favorite game, followed closely by blackjack. Got taken to the cleaners by Bellagio on a $10 table using one of those godawful continual shuffling machines. Now I remember why I prefer shoes or single/double deck blackjack. I walked away from everywhere else I played a winner.
Too bad I funneled most of my winnings into other, um, "adult", pursuits. The Olympic Garden was nice, though. ;)
Ready to head back in the fall, I think...

Anyone who puts some time in on slot machines will lose. And that's the way it is. Anyone who says they win at slots is either lying, has forgotten about all the times they lost, or hasn't played them for very long.

Me, if I'm going to sit at a slot machine, I may as well just be sitting here pressing the button on my mouse over and over since the thinking process is the same. Blackjack you at least get to make decisions at. Also, a typical slot machine has a payback of around 80%. So for every $100 you put in, you will, on average, get back $80.

But for blackjack, assuming someone does the obvious things like not hit 17+, if that person never doubles down or anything else, they'll still be only playing at a 15% disadvantage. So the worst blackjack player is still much better than the best slot player. You can sit at a blackjack table and basically do anything you want and still not lose as much as you would at a slot machine.

It is quite easy to learn basic strategy, and once you learn that, you are only at a .5% or so disadvantage. So for every $100 you wager, you will, on average, only lose 50 cents. Not so bad. And if you bet enough, you can then make money in comped rooms and food and things. Lots of people do that. They still lose money while playing, but the loss is nowhere near what they would have had to pay for the room and theater tickets and whatever else the casino gives them.

I put some years into studying blackjack and card counting and shuffle tracking and all that good stuff, and for awhile was playing "professionally part-time," (not a true professional since I didn't rely on the money to eat, but was playing 10-20 hours a week), so if I can help steer someone in the right direction, just ask.

The biggest difference is the jackpot part of it. In Blackjack there are no "big jackpots", in slots of course there is that very small chance that somebody will take the full pot, hence the lower winning odds.
