Do your speakers have to be hooked up to a sub? (1 Viewer)

....or can you just plug the sub into the receiver without it controlling your mains.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't have a sub yet and am quite ignorant to them

Which receiver do you have?
If it has a sub out or "LFE output" no problem. Yes, you can hook it up through this output.

Onkyo 696 I'd have to check on the output. If is doesn't, does that ean I have to go thru the sub?

All products with Dolby Digital processing are supposed to bass management circuitry done in the preamp section, so you don't have to have wires routed from your sub to your mains.
Before Dolby Digital, the only way to get good bass management was to buy THX-certified gear or a receiver with pre-out/main-in jacks like the Harman Kardon units.
Woo-hoo. Gotta love Dolby Digital!

I've got a 696 (great receiver) and it's got a sub out. Just remember, you'll need an external amp to drive it (or them :)
