I'm talking about under 1000 bucks retail price, ideally.

If that's not an option then maybe a good HTIB (like the 770/870 from Onkyo) and then a seperate DVD player with HDMI output. But then what's a good budget DVD player with HDMI out?

My friend was talking all high end when I helped him wire his home theater room but now he's in a budget crunch and still wants to go through with everything so he's got this nice homea theater room prewired for 6.1 sound, a projector, and so on, but he's gonna cut it short with a HTIB... and unfortunately now I have to find a DVD player that fits his budget with HDMI out so it can run to the projector.

I don't know of any with built in DVD with HDMI / upconversion.....

I think you can do better for him, than you might think possible...

Start with two of these Dayton subs...

Look into JBL E30 speakers, you need three pair for the 6.1....

Then get the best AVR and DVD player you can get him to spring for. I hate to see him put something in there that is just plain not worthy of an HT room if he does not have to.
