Dan, I found a 6" dial caliper at Sears a couple of years ago that is great for woodworking. It is very inexpensive, maybe $20 if I remember right. It is made of plastic/fiberglass and the scale is graduated in fractional increments as well as decimal. Plenty accurate for wood. I checked it against a Starrett and was suprised how accurate it is.

I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the right tool. Can one of you guys post a link to a picture of a dial caliper?

Here is the one I have from Sears...

They are about $25.00. I wouldn't put them in the "have to have" class but they are sure nice. I use mine all the time when I'm working on a project. They are very good for setting the cutting height of routers and table saws. Much easier than a tape for thickness and depth measurments.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking of. I just never heard it referred to as a "dial" caliper.
I might have to pick one up. I have to have at least 1 of everything!:)
