I can't believe some of the complaints from some of you.

PDAs on school grounds
PDA in this thread did not mean electronic organizers, it meant personal display of affection. And its a good rules. Its a disruption to the rest of the school.

Rules are there for a reason. Even I understood the reasons when I was in school.

In our parking lot we have a hill that is used as the main entrance and it has gravel on the sides of it. For some odd reason they do not let us park there on the side. You can easily park there and it is not a safety hazard of any kind. When I tried to park there they made me get a parking pass for 20 bucks and park in the crowded parking lot where dumb asses frequently play football and trust me they are not that good. I don't want my car getting hit with a football bye somebody who doesn't give a crap abuot anybody else's property. Also when we have assembly's they used to let teachers stay in there classrooms and students go into one of these teachers classrooms and hang out if they did not feel like going to said assembly. I loved this rule because there are a few teachers that I really like to hang out and talk with but this year they have banned this rule. This not only makes the teachers and students unhappy this results in more and more students skipping assemblys(like me:D). Basically they are to stupid to make the connection. In case you guys couldn't tell I really don't like my school.

If someone is beating the crap out of you, stabbing you, shooting you, you can't fight back, otherwise you get suspended.

Oh yeah, and even if you try to follow their rules and tattle on the kid that won't leave you alone, and give 3 advance warnings (3 strikes) that you're going to beat the sh** out of the little wiener and then you go and do it when they don't do squat you still get suspended

I said to the principal. "This is the final warning. Either you do something, or I'm going to punch him". Guess who got suspended?

*sigh*

I know especially in the late teen years alot of people like to rebel against authority and gain a degree of independence, but the rules are there for a reason.
Some are. Many are there simply because someone in authority likes to flex his or her muscles. Take, for instance, my high school's "no pagers" rule (cellular phones still weighed five pounds, fit in a bag, and cost $3 a minute, so none of us could afford them). I ran a business in high school, and my pager was necessary - my computer would call it and notify me if my server went down. Since people were paying me money to access said server, knowing it had crashed would allow me to drive home during lunch and reboot it.

I can't count the number of times I was suspended for "insubordination". Some school guard (usually the prick ex-cop who was fired from the force for wrecking his cruiser while driving under the influence - great role model there, don't you think?) would stop me and, knowing that I carried a pager due to past confrontations, demand that I hand it over. When I refused, they would yell and threaten me. Once, the SOB grabbed my shoulder and attempted to forcibly remove the pager from my pocket, then acted quite surprised when I shoved him away from me. Of course, this was all "my" fault, and he "never" touched me.

Once, I wrote a full page letter to the principle explaining my circumstances. I explained that the pager was only set to vibrate and never disturbed the class (true). I explained that I had the full support and permission of all of my teachers to carry the pager (true). Yet, I was still told that I was not allowed to carry it and that I would continue to be thrown out of school each time I was caught with it. The reason? "Only drug dealers use pagers." I remarked that drug dealers also used pencils and paper to jot down their orders, and perhaps we should stop using those items within the school, but the moron was less than amused.

Of course I contined to disrespect their bullshit rule, and I continued to be harassed and suspended on a regular basis. My parents did their best for me, going down to the school on a regular basis to raise hell, but the morons were stuck on their stupid policy. The end of my sophomore year, they put the "no pagers" rule in writing and added it to the school's handbook. Which was fine by me: I skipped the last two years of high school hell and racked up some college credits at the community college instead.

Another interesting line from these people, when I explained I would not give up my pager for the sake of my business: "Running a business at your age is inappropriate and interferes with your learning." No, idiot, YOU interfered with my learning by crafting a BS rule and constantly throwing me out of school over it.

Incidentally, while I've got a disciplinary record a foot high sitting in an office somewhere, I don't regret it a bit. The experienced I gained running a successful computer related business at that age put me way ahead in my career.

Schools nowadays are even worse. As a result of my negative experiences (I've got many more stories to tell), my children are being homeschooled.

Jeez, Mike settle down. Those are just my opinions and I'm sorry if they offended you or you don't agree with them. I just got sick and tired of all the BS that went on at my school Apparently your High School experience was better than mine.

Oh I'm calm just fine :) Yup...they are your opinions and I'm just stating why the rules are there. I'm not offended at all. BS during high school is a part of life. Everyone went through it, everyone will always go through it. My high school experience was a waste of time. I went to a very strict catholic high school. Shirts and ties and strict teachers. Lots of stupid stuff but I understood then why the rules were in place. It was worse at the local public high school. We've all been there, but some of us were able to cope better than others. Oh, I graduated in 92 so it wasn't all that too long ago (ok...10 years...but doesn't seem that long :) )

I graduated high school in 1982, car phones were just that, installed in a car, pagers were rare and I do not remember even seeing a student with one, not even mentioned in the rules, we had a no gum rule because people liked to stick it on the bottom of desks, I had gum almost the entire time I was in high school and never got caught with it, the last 3 years I was in high school I went to a catholic school (Moeller) and we had a dress code which does not hurt one bit, first year I was there, we had to wear ties but that went away due to some creative color combinations and creative knot tieing.

we had the standard no knife rule but if you had one of the little nail file knife things, nothing was said, there was a no weapons rule, did not say guns and they never look in the cars, my first year of high school in NC, I know students who had rifles in their cars at school and this was OK as long as they were not brought inside the school

The rules are meant to reduce distractions in class to help the learning process, the main problem today is not the rules in the schools, it is the lack of discipline at home which makes the kids think it is OK to do the same crap in school, I am all for dress codes, no cell phone rules, no pagers in class, no radios in class or in the halls, when I went to school, we had a no calculators rule, try that today and you wonder why your teenage cashier can't give you the proper change

the thing I got in trouble for was reading in class, my english literature teacher threw a fit when he caught me reading a Sci Fi book in his class, I consequently failed english lit (Boring) and had to go to summer school were I got a b+ after skipping half the classes, I could not diagram a sentence if my life depended on it.

Well,I was released 8 years ago but I remember a few.One that always stuck out in my mind was..If a guy wears a v-neck sweater he must have an undershirt. However a woman can wear one without the sweater. Now,there is alot more to see when a woman bends down to get her stuff than if a guy does....or mabey that was the point and the male teachers and prinicpal pushed this one through..bunch of pervs.

the other one was,no shorts. No matter how hot it was there was a year or two we were not allowed to wear shorts.Well,a few of the brave guys decided to wear skirts...i was not one of them. They could not touch the guys for doing it and the school staff finally allowed shorts.

Sorry, I'm too old to have remembered any strange rules, but I wanted to chime in here, at any rate.

I have heard that some parents want their kids to have cell phones mostly for emergencies. (The first thought that comes into my mind here would be moments after a school shooting) It would reassuring to know that your kid(s) are ok. I basically think that the major problem is that they need to have an 'off' switch, but then I wonder who would be calling them during class hours. I mean, their friends are in school too, aren't they?

Mike, you do have the right reasons for most of the rules, but it still doesn't address nail clippers and asprin, oh, and the little chains some people have for their keys and such.

I'm still trying to find out what happened to the witch trial in Oklahoma. I think it was supposed to have started last Feb, but details are lacking. Does anyone near there know if the ACLU suceeded?

I am reading this thread in utter shock. Do people actually believe it's perfectly acceptable for kids to make-out in the halls, to chew gum in class, to run in the halls? How can the same forum that throws a shit-fit everytime a cell-phone goes off in a movie theater see no problem with that happening in a classroom?

Call me old-fashioned, but school should be considered hallow ground. Discipline, respect, and learning should be the focus, not socialising and snacking.

I once had a teacher that wouldn't let us yawn in class without covering our mouths. At the time, I thought it was very dumb, but now I know he was right. Can you imagine trying to teach a roomfull of people yawning, masticating, and answering cell phones? I also support the rule some teachers have against wearing hats in class. It's a matter of respect.

And no, I'm not some fuddy-duddy hard-ass. I'm only 24.

The only crazy school rule we have around here is that all high school students must take and pass a basic skills assessment.

You'd be suprised, Mike. I've got friends going through teacher training here in DFW as well as back home in Scotland. The crap they have to put up with compared to 'back in my day' is shocking. I'm 28. The class I went through high school with wasn't exactly well behaved, but still nothing like what goes on now. In a lot of cases, the power has shifted from the teacher to the pupil, stopping the teacher from doing his/her job.

After reading some of the posts in this thread, it's obvious to me that teachers have no time to teach spelling or grammar. No wonder - they are too busy trying to teach basic socialization and manners to a bunch of spoiled, uncivilized, undisciplined, self-absorbed, illiterate, and monstrous children. What a shame.

Yeah I don't get stuff like that either. Many of the rules make sense, but a few of them don't (kinda like getting on an airplane now that I think of it). If I had to guess I'd say its all insurance driven. Yeah you could stab someone with nail clippers, OD on asprin, and strangle someone with a chain. Stuff like that sounds really too silly though.

I tend to agree with Janna and others who are for strict school rules. Some rules may be against common sense, but unfortunately, when the choice is between common sense or the lives of students, I'll throw common sense out the window every time.

And to the current students who complain about having to listen to boring teachers drone on all day long, just wait until you have to pay $10,000+ a year for that privilege. When you're in college you'll be jotting down every little rambling speech and random thought the instructor exhibits - and asking for clarification!

School sucks and I have got a better education from movies and the library than I ever did in school. So glad I just have one more month, then no more school!
