Is there any need to connect component video through receiver esp. if the receiver don't have on screen menus?

You only need to go through the receiver if you have more than one source using component outputs, such as dvd player and HD STB. Going through the receiver then, makes it easier to switch between the two.

In every case though, it uses more cables than connecting directly to the TV. It's a convenience thing, but can be helpful if you run out of inputs on the back of your TV.

I've also heard that most OSD's don't work well with component cables. Better with s-video............
