This will be a tournament to decide the best Criterion Collection film in my DVD collection. Voting should be based strictly on your opinion of the film, NOT the DVD. The quality of the DVD, supplements, packaging, etc, should only come into play as a tiebreaker if you can't make up your mind one way or the other.

I have 69 spine numbers. Leaving out the BRD Trilogy Supplements disc makes 68. I have picked the 6 that I think are the least seen around the forum and your 1st task is to pick 2 of the 6 that should remain in the tournament.

Select 2 of the following:

Carl Th. Dreyer: My Metier
Under The Roofs Of Paris
A Nous La Liberte
The Firemen's Ball
Veronika Voss
Lola

Advanced To 2nd Round

I'll participate but expect quite a few abstains from myself, and I suspect a few others. I have been trying to build up my Criterion Collection, but it is a slow process.

I have not seen any of those 6 listed above.

À Nous la Liberté

Lola

One from both René Clair and Fassbinder.

By the way Brook, I just realized that your current quote in your sig is from Fassbinder and the last one referenced drugs. Are you trying to tell us something? :D ;)

I haven't seen My Metier (or any of the Dreyer boxset), I own the BRD set but haven't yet watched Lola (and it's been 20 years since I've seen Veronika Voss)...therefore

A Nous la Liberte
The Fireman's Ball

A Nous La Liberte

I really need to watch the Dreyer doc and the Fassbinders. :b

And UTROP is on my to-buy list.

Ok, A Nous La Liberte & The Firemen's Ball are in, the other 4 drop out.

Bill, you NEED to watch Lola. It's my favorite of the trilogy.

Ok, let's go ahead and get this started. I think I'll just start at either end of my collection for the pairings. Remember you don't need to have seen the actual Criterion disc, just the movie.

Round 1

#9 HARD BOILED

#224 PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET

Ok, I knew that this would be tough, but to vote against Bergman on the very first round is distressing. And to choose between a fine John Woo and an above average Sam Fuller is very hard.

Hard-Boiled

Ikiru

This has a lot of promise.

Bill, I'll need a full report on Dawn. I'm going to try and see it late tomorrow night.

Ikiru and Seventh Seal are both top 10 films for me so this is a painful bracket right off the bat. And looking at future pairings, it won't get any better. I will be making slight adjustments to the numbering so films from the same director don't face off in the first round. In the first 8-10 pairings there's only one that I would call easy. I also realize I should have added a couple more films to the "obscure" entry round.

Ikiru advances 5-4, with me casting a very painful tie-breaking vote.
