I think most importantly you want one that's as closely timbre matched to your front speakers as possible, usually the same brand. This is so that left-to-right and right-to-left panning effects are presented seamlessly and smoothly. What are your front speakers?

Right now you can get the Polk cs245i from Crutchfield for $149. I think it is an excellent center. MSRP is $250 but it is being discontinued and it is a very good buy.

I decided to try the HTD level 3 and have been very happy with it. It is big and heavy but that is the way I like my center and sub.

$300 now?

A little more than $300 will get you a S center and a set of S26 bookshelves to use for mains. This is the setup I am going with as soon as I get the extra cash.

I think you guys get paid by JBL lol, My only concern about S center is that it has plastic body, and my experience says that wooden body sounds superior than plastic, what you guys think?
