Opinions about which prog scan players also are known for excellent CD-audio (not DVD-A) sound?

Jonathan, I would take a look at the Denon DVD-1600. It's a single-disc player that is also DVD-Audio-compatible. It has gotten good reviews as a CD player both here and on the Secrets to Home Theater web site. Crutchfield and Tweeter sell it for $500. It could be your best bet.
