Apollo 13 - 1995 Tom Hanks DVD's OOP...Why?? (1 Viewer)

Yeah, a lot of early Universal titles have crapped out, but there are many more that are OOP. Thousands! If you don't get it when it comes out you may end up without it!

Sorry to have to be that way but consider this - They press them and go on to something else. If they want it done again, they have to 'schedule' the time at the pressing plant.

Of course, in the meantime, they have other new disks to crank out, so when the initial pressing is all sold, that is it.

Why have Universal not rereleased at least Backdraft and Out of Sight on DVD? The newer HD transfers of them look very good compared to the old DVDs and have been out for a while now on d-theater.

Good question, Tony. Who the frick knows? Universal has done some positively inscrutable things with their hi rez audio releases (i.e., releasing the same album on both SACD and DVD-A, but not doing either for other albums we know they have m.c. mixes of because they too were on DTS CD).

They're perhaps either not going to re-release on standard def DVD, or they're waiting for a marketing hook on which to hang the re-release for tie-in purposes.

FYI, Mallrats is out of print right now too. Universal wants to do another SE, and Kevin Smith has said he won't let them do it without him so that he can ensure a high quality release. Also, 2005 will be the tenth anniversary of Mallrats, so maybe we'll get a kick ass 'Mallrats X' set.

Don't know if that was common knowledge or not, though I'd just throw that out there.

I have a question, I bought my copy of Apollo 13 used at Gamestop last year, it plays fine, but how do I know if it was a re-press or an original run pressing? Is their any way to tell?

As for this new dvd coming, to hell with it if you ask me. As others have said, that IMAX version serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever! I mean at least with say Ghosts of the Abyss the film itself is what we wanted, it wasn't previously available on dvd, releases as IMAX and then put out on dvd again.

One more thing about this new Apollo 13 dvd, if the IMAX version is indeed 1.66:1, it can burn for all I care, 1.66:1 is not the films OAR.

I have my copy now, I won't be getting the new one, unless of course it goes bad like many of yours did, then i'll get it and just throw that IMAX disc where it belongs...in the trash. I'm glad I didn't pay to see that in IMAX, I don't care how large it was.

I think that the UPC code for the original release on 'Apollo 13' is 025192015328. I am not sure that it WILL crap out - rather than MIGHT crap out, too.

Like, I wouldn't send one back saying that you EXPECT it to go bad sometime in the future.

I figured this was part of what was going on: check out the overlap between Universal titles currently OOP and what titles the studio announced at CES today as being amongst their first slate of HD DVDs to be released in the fourth quarter. Apollo 13, 12 Monkeys and Backdraft are all on the list.

I'm having trouble posting links at the moment--check today's Bits post for links to stories with more info and an exciting list of HD title announcements.

So by show of hands: how many people think it's a conspiracy that some Casino DVDs stopped playing a few months before word comes from the Bits today that an SE will street on 6/14/05? ;)

No word on supps yet, but maybe we'll get that DTS track that was on the LD.

The SE announcements are coming 2 fast 2 furious from U now: 2 months ago, Apollo; 2 weeks ago, Monkeys . . .

Methinks the HD Iceman cometh . . .

Add me to the list of folks with a dead Apollo 13. I got the 10th Anniversary disc today and wanted to compare, but it was a no-go. Two separate Panasonic players wouldn't recognize it, and my DVD-ROM drive also failed to detect its existence. It's dead! Guess I should check some of my other old Uni titles... :frowning:

This thread is scaring me.
I just checked all my "old" (1998 or earlier) Universal DVDs (thank you, DVD Profiler, for a studio filter):

Animal House
Apollo 13
The Apostle
Babe
Blues Bros.
Field of Dreams
Out of Sight
Primary Colors
Psycho
Scent of a Woman
Vertigo

Luckily, they all still play. OTOH, I may have an "unfair advantage": I'm still running a 6-year-old DVD player (Pioneer DV-09 Elite) in my dedicated HT.

I didn't check them on a "newer" player - as long as I know one of my players still reads them, I'll assume I'm OK.

Yeah, but I bet if you saw this thread drag itself out of a well then walk directly toward you as you stare at the TV screen, you'd really crap your pants...

Colin,

Based on your memory of the original disc, does the "new" version still contain the original transfer? The original disc definitely has that older DVD mastering look if you will.

I'm operating at something of a loss here because I don't know enough about how IMAX telecine is done. But having said that . . .

Is my memory not serving me correctly? I have a vague recollection of reading about the IMAX version of the picture having been edited, in part because a film close to three hours in length will not fit on a IMAX projector platter (it's the same reason that there were no magnetic sound 70mm prints of Titanic--they were all DTS).

If it's a different edit of the film, then doesn't that mean by definition that the transfer on the new disc will be different?

And btw, what was the length of the original film? Wasn't it longer than 140 minutes?

With the release of this title just around the corner, are there any reviews of it yet, in particular, I am looking for A/V comparisons.

I'm sure reviews will pop up Monday in some spots. I intend to post mine Tuesday. Again, I'd love to directly compare the visuals, but since my old DVD died, that ain't gonna happen! :frowning:

I'd expect the audio to be identical for the two DVDs since both provide DD 5.1 - I see no reason for a change. Of course, the IMAX one also includes DTS, but that's not apples-apples...

Wow, sounds as if I will be picking this up and selling my original version. I just popped it in a few weeks ago and it worked fortunately.
