Does anyone have any opinions about this $850 powered subwoofer? My ears really enjoyed it at the dealer, but with the rave reviews over SVS, I'm wondering whether I should go a different route. Any comments?

Hey, if the size doesn't bother you, I'd bet the performance of the SVS would kick it's butt all over the place.

Randy,

Have you heard the Knight Shadow sub, or are you basing your opinion the SVS performance/reviews? It's a pretty new sub I believe. Just curious. Thanks!

I think Randy may just be basing it on SVS's reputation. That reputation, IMO, is that against a brick and mortar type sub (Velo, Sunfire, Paradigm, etc...), the SVS will almost always trounce a similar priced product (dollar-dB ratio). I would think Carver would fit into the B&M type subs.

Now, compared to other direct-market subs (Hsu, Adire, Accoustic Visions (sp?), VMPS), I think the SVS may still be the best dollar-dB sub, but the margin is probably a lot closer. I think these other direct-market subs also fair very, very well against the big-name subs (Velo, blah, blah, blah).

This is based mainly on things I have read, so please take it for what it's worth (not a lot, I'm affraid). I know that Velo and Paradigm make some killer subs, but these much less expensive subs do a great job in competing with the HGS and Servo 15s of the world, IMHO. Sorry for the somewhat of-topic tirade. I was just speaker for Randy :b.

Back on topic, not only have I not heard the Knight Shadow sub, I've not heard of the Knight Shadow sub. I hope someone can help you out in this regard, as I like to have a good idea of what subs there are floating around out there.

Nothing against any of these other fine companies but hey, what about my favorite direct-market speaker company:)? ACI has been doing it longer than the rest of them combined! Doing a darn fine job too.

Thanks for the input to date. I live in a townhouse with a couple with a infant baby as a neighbor, so (being a relatively considerate neighbor), I don't intend to crack the foundation with the decibal levels from my sub--that'll happen in due course when I buy my first free-standing house. That said, I'm interested in a clean, tight sub with good musicality. The Carver fit that bill very nicely based on my test run. I was really wowed by it.

Any others to consider at that price range?

And if you do consider direct market speakers, don't forget about ACI ;). Their kits seem to be a great deal. Thanks for the reminder, John. ACI should not be left off of that list :D.

I really like my carver sub, as I don't have room or aesthetics to put in an SVS in my apartment.

The Carver is basically a Sunfire True without as big of an amp...mine is turned up no more than a quarter, and it is pretty deep and loud for ht.

I don't use it in my 2 ch system, as my Dyns don't require a sub...

Keith--

I'd read that the Knight Shadow is very similar to the Sunfire True Architectural, but at half the cost. What's the story with Bob Carver? I'd heard that his company floundered, and that he went to Sunfire. Is he back with his old company now? Is he still afiliated with Sunfire?

Thad you might want to consider the new 10" EarthQuake Sub.
It lists for $840 but can be picked up for $600 or less and will probably give you everything you can use.
110 db @ 20hz.
I think the Cherry looks better too (WAF a problem?)

If you can't find a good price, e-mail me and I'll turn you on to a good source.
