whatever happened to keith? haven't seen him around lately....
Tom is correct. My focus has shifted primarily to music rather than hardware, and I've been posting on Steve Hoffman's web site. I admit, however, that I miss this site and need to get back here.

It's nice to see this thread revived!

The first CD player I had was the 2nd generation Pioneer PD 5010. It didn't have a time clock, just track number. The first CD I got was a gift, "Dark Side of the Moon" and the second was a defective copy of "No Jacket Required" by Phil Collins. I learned later that the CD player was defective, not the disc because I still have it.

"Sussudio"! Forgot to include this '85 release in my previous post. I spun this one back in the day quite a bit, too. "Long Long Way To Go" is even more poignant now given all that has happened in the intervening 18 years.

I bought a used BSR (british made) CD player (still have it and it works great) along with Pat Benatar "Seven the Hard Way" back in 1986 from a pawn shop, first person I knew to have CD. Now just bought a DVD-A/SACD player and once again the first I know!

My favourite memory from that era is this guy I used to date and his toploader CD player in 1984. He plays me a Beach Boys CD which I'm utterly unimpressed with. So, he pulls out the sounds effects disc to show me the helicopter track to impress me. He proceeds to tell me how he blew the tweeters out of his old, recently deceased, speakers with it. He's bragging on his new Bose 301's and how impressive this is gonna be. He puts it and comes back over and sits down. As soon as the helicopter comes on the speakers begin to crackle and self destruct. There's no remote control. This is 1984 afterall. He jumps out of his seat and runs for the volume control! It's too late. Before he's accross the room the speakers have gone silent, kapaut! Another pair bites the dust, or is it rides the bus?;) He was always trying to prove his stereo was better than mine...silly man!

I remeber my first CD player. It's was a used Dual that used a cd well and you watched the CD spinning inside. It was built in 83, I got it in about 85. My uncle had given it to me and it broke on me (stopped tracking) in about 89. I gave it back to him and it's sitting in his attic. It's still around just because it's cool looking equipment. :)
I also remember and have my first CD. Pet Shop Boys - Please. I got it in 84 when the album came out.
Ahhh memories.

Paul, I bet that's the disc. It's a long time ago and I certainly don't have total recall at this point. That sounds like the one and the release date is in the ballpark. :)
Myself, I got an LD player before I got a CD player. Back in the mid-80's LD players didn't play CD's. I finally got a CD player about '88 or '89.
Grant, I've been through this with several guys who felt totally deflated;) by my racks of stereo stuff. Me, I always had speakers that matched my decor. I used to change the grill cloth on about every pair I'd buy.:)

Ah, yes, the old days... I got my first CD player in 1985, (a Yamaha piece of junk that died in a year) followed by an ADS -- an *EXPENSIVE* piece of junk that died in about 18 months, followed by the nice Denon that I have and use to this day.

I don't remember for sure, but I think my first CD was the Eurythmics' Be Yourself Tonight.

The Tower Records annual January clearance sale was a big event -- a good portion of my collection got bought then.

I haven't seriously shopped for CDs in about 6 or 7 years, and my DVD collection will overtake my CD collection, possibly within a year... Sad, but true. It has been a combination of CD price increases, and the loss of WBAI's morning music shows where I was discovering most new stuff.

Now I buy mostly the work of local bands at their shows, stuff that friends tell me about, jazz and classical music.

Last discovery: Neko Case and one of her bands: The New Pornographers -- great stuff.

I still have that disc! Remember it has the original THX deep note on the end of track 1. I extracted it from the disc and I still use it as the start up sound for Windows XP.

On a different note, I had wanted to return the previously mentioned defective Phil Collins disc and the store would not take it back because, in their words, "Compact Discs were perfect, flawless and defect free."

Cool thread.
Somehow I must haved missed this one since I was around back in 2000.
And I see Keith over at Steves forum all the time too.
I bought 2 CD's before my first player - Heart's "Little Queen" and Tangerine Dream's "LeParc"
My first CD player was a Pioneer in early '85. It lasted all of 13 months before crapping out.
Then it was a used Yamaha which I didn't like because if I programmed several tracks it would automatically throw in a 2 second gap - even if the tracks were consecutive, a real pain with Pink Floyd CD's. You see, I would record them on tape for my car, and keep one tape per record by recording them with a side change and recording the longest side first, cutting out the rest of the tape, and splicing what's left back to the leader. I would program the appropriate first or second side songs (while watching the accumulated time so that it didn't go over the tape's time). That was useless with the Yamaha because of the added gaps. Then it died after about 10 months.
The it was a Sony. It lasted about 3 years before it started skipping about 20 minutes into any CD.
I bought my current Sony in 1990. Still happily in use today. :)
