I've become so tired of superhero films, that I was going to pass on this one, but am please that I didn't. My son suggested that it was a fun film.

He was correct, as it reminded me more of the lighthearted, or at least lighter-hearted fare, akin to Kick-Ass or Deadpool. The Marvel films seem to be taking themselves a bit too seriously lately.

As directed by David Sandberg, the film remains fresh and grounded, until it takes off in Zachary Levi vs. Mark Strong world, which had me thinking back to the magical battles between Boris Karloff and Vincent Price in AIP's The Raven.

Just great fun for a couple of hours, with effects that aren't overbearing, and a superb soundtrack in Dolby Atmos that not only fills one's home theater, but shakes the rafters with low frequency information.

Much of it was shot on location in Philadelphia, with some wonderful set pieces - one involving the statue of Mr. Penn. I was fortunate to spend a good bit of my childhood there. Main portions were shot in Toronto, inclusive of Studio work.

Remember, when in Philly, visit the original Betsy Ross House. And ask for Babs. One of the nice things about the city, is that there is still enough of the 18th century surviving, that one can take a trip back in time, without hitting Williamsburg. I once tried to find the first Mint, but it hasn't been there in weeks.

What does remain that's worth a visit is Independence Hall, and that bell that used to be on the reverse of half dollars.

It's hard to destroy half the life in the universe with lighthearted fun, yet the Marvel movies manage to still include a great deal of humor in their movies; nowhere on the level of Deadpool, of course.

You hadn't heard? It was caulked and painted, and now appears pristine.

Honestly, you guys are making me think we have to steal the Declaration of Independence.

I didn't catch Shazam! in theaters even though I wanted to, but will definitely blind buy the disc based on Robert's view. I can understand people tiring of superhero movies, but I'm not there yet.

I bought this one sight unseen. I'd passed on DC fare ever since the BvS and JL movies (which in a rare move, I streamed vs. blind-bought and did not like them very much) but quite a few people I trust (now including RAH) had told me that this was a good film. Now I can't wait for it to arrive on Thursday.

Picked up ‘Shazam’ 4K at Target today, a blind buy. We watched it tonight....

Not quite as good as I was hoping (based on its Rotten Tomatoes scores) but well worth the blind buy. I give it 7 out of 10 stars. We’ll be showing it in the Booth Bijou Garage Theater in a couple of weeks.

I think this is an accurate score. I thought it started off really well, but the last act took a step back.

I'm surprised how many people describe this film as "lighthearted fun".

Sure, a lot of it goes that way, but there are plenty of rather dark scenes in it. It's inconsistent in tone and can be really grim at times!
