Michael Ritchie's The Island was always an okay film, but never more.

Finally on Blu-ray via Scream Factory, the Universal production appears to be exactly what it is.

A Universal production.

Meaning that the Blu-ray is an okay version of an okay film. But never more.

Color seems to be fine, but the overall image appears nicely homogenized, and at times a touch smeary.

Which is precisely how most Universal masters of this era should look.

* Inclusive of the generic Universal handicap.

Sad about the late Richie. His first half-dozen films were delightful, a couple of them now looked upon as classics. Then he began the not uncommon slide toward mediocrity and never recovered. This has happened to too many talented artists, and I can't help but think that the rigid studio system was largely the cause..
