I have a huge problem believing this, but Rob Reiner's wonderful film about growing into one's teens, Stand By Me...

IS 33 YEARS OLD!

Does it stand the test of time?

Beautifully.

Is the new 4k release from Columbia a worthy move to the modern home video era?

You better believe it!

Score another home run for the Crisp team.

Nothing really needs to be said about this film, unless one has never experienced it, and if that's the case, I'm jealous.

Just grab a copy.

The new 4k looks every bit as if one is screening an 35mm EK print.

The audio is what the audio always was, which is quite centric. I did have an anomaly pop up, which is that although I made certain that I was playing the new Dolby Atmos track, it wasn't coming through as such on my system.

Nada.

It either was't there, or wasn't recognized, but I'm not concerned as there can't be a great deal of Atmos info added to this film anyway. Mostly crickets in the left and right front channels.

Whether a tech problem on my end, or a mastering situation, I don't have the time to look into it.

My advice. Just grab a copy, as it looks like fillum.

Image – 5

Audio – 5 (Dolby Atmos??)

Pass / Fail – Pass

Highly Recommended

Ordered and on its way. I was so surprised to hear the announcement for this film. It's a no-brainer. Wonderful movie and a great 4K presentation.

Originally released mono. Even if Sony went back to original stems for an Atmos track, I doubt much could be gleaned.

My disc registers it as Atmos signal.

Will watch it this weekend.

Hope others chime in, possibly a disc defect maybe?

Also must applaud Sony for also giving consumers the option of the 5.1 dts HDMA and also the original MONO audio in DTS HDMA.

Wish other studios would offer the same. Esp when the film has an original Stereo or Ultra Stereo audio mix in PCM or HD audio

As I posted in the review thread, my first one did have a data glitch at the pie-eating contest scene. Second one which Amazon shipped promptly played flawlessly (at least for that scene and another 20m after it, I didn't re-screen the whole movie).

I'd encourage others to check their disc in case the mastering and/or pressing plant was having an off-day.

@Robert Harris mine registered as Atmos as well on a Denon 4400 IIRC but as you say, it's not a particularly active Atmos mix. I'll check on my second AVR and report back (although it's also a Denon so it will likely have the same result).

I have a decent 5.1 sound system. But I really like the Mono track. It is wonderful. Dialogue, and the music (love those 50's songs) are so warm, and rich sounding. Even if I had an Atmos setup I think I'd go with the Mono track.
