Daniel Petrie's 1961, A Raisin in the Sun, is brilliant cinema.

I tried to see it theatrically when I was a teen, but missed the final ten minutes or so, as their was a racial altercation in the theater, and police were called in.

I actually didn't finally see the entire film until the '80s in non-theatrical, 16mm.

It was a riveting film then, and now.

Everything about it, especially the brilliant acting, has seldom been seen better.

It is that good.

Columbia has licensed the film to Criterion, which has taken Columbia's gorgeous new HD master, added some extraordinary special features, and offered it to the public.

Gorgeous black & white as photographed by Charles Lawton, Jr., with an image harvested and presented to absolutely perfection.

You need to own this one.

Just a great film. Saw it in original release (as a teen), and many times since.

Acting is superb. It is interesting to see what some of the cast went on to do.

It also has a very good musical score, which is seldom noted. It is a score that often plays in my mind.

First saw this on CBS Night at the Movies back in the late 60’s. What an exceptional film. I can’t wait to pick this up the Blu-Ray and show it to several friends that have never seen nor heard of it.

"A Raisin in the Sun" is a vastly important play from our 20th American century.
It's up there with "Our Town", "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Death of a Salesman" and "Long Days Journey Into Night".

Doesn't the film have basically the same cast as the one that opened on Broadway? Oh I get it, this was a joke.

On Film, Joel Fluellen took over the role.

In the 1959 West End production, Earle Hyman portrayed Walter Lee Younger.

And for those unfamiliar with the film, the cast includes:
Ruby Dee, Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, John Fiedler, Diana Sands, Ivan Dixon and Louis Gossett, Jr.

Bobo was portrayed on Broadway by Lonne Elder III and in the film by Joel Fluellen.
In the West End production of 1959, Walter Lee Younger was portrayed by Earle Hyman.

Also, Glynn Turman was probably a little too old to play Travis Younger in the film as he did on Broadway.
