How can you tell if the DVD you are watching is video or film based so that you can set the prog dvd player to the correct setting for 3:2 pulldown?

Try recording a small portion using your VCR. Then, playing the tape, single step and you can see the 3-2-3-2 repeat pattern if it is a 24 fps film source.
I think the 3-2 pulldown pattern can be seen despite the Macrovision copy inhibitor in the video signal.

Your best bet is to leave your player in its auto-detect mode, if that is a possiblity. Virtually all theatrically released movies will require film mode, though.
