I would second the suggestion from Art_C regarding the HTD speakers - I have 4 of the Level IIIs (bookshelf not towers) plus center channel, set up with SVS25-31CS and BFD, and am very happy with this system. System has impressed numerous visitors as well, albeit these weren't 'hi-fi' people...
This reply is not so relevant to the last few posts, but I think may have some bearing on the idea expressed in the middle of the thread regarding a 'push-pull' arrangement with the two subs out of phase creating more air movement and therefore more volume. Indeed it might, but the point is not...
The album 'MOFRO' by a band called Blackwater has some good deep bass in it - it really gets my SVS25-31, and the mirror on the wall next to it, fired up!
Thank Thomas. Within minutes after my post I found the 'cult' and am reading away. You seem to be a prominent figure there.:) Already a number of my questions have been answered, and I have some good ideas.
Greg
You guys have really gotten under my skin and I have to do a DIY sub. I'm motivated by the project in itself, and of course I want bodacious bass. My SVS25-31 seems pretty awesome to my relatively uninitiated ears (and body) but this forum has convinced me that I NEED MORE !!
Are there any...
I have an 1124, and it does have the POP when it is turned on or off. However I have not encountered any buzzing of any kind; neither electrical hum nor mechanical buzzing.
I have a set (since early December) and I'm well pleased with them. I did send the subwoofer back and got an SVS with BFD equalizer; the combination of the HTD sub and some bad room dynamics did not give a very pleasing result. By the way I do not have the towers.
I have not listened...
I'm using a BFD1124 to EQ the SVS25-31 in my middle-of-the-road system in a big room. It really gives a much superior result compared to no EQ. I used ETF software which revealed one very large peak (due the room) and several small peaks and nulls; flattening these out results in much better...
I have finally gotten my system sounding really nice, thanks to addition of SVS25-31 and using a BFD to tame room response (in conjunction with the EFT software). Just the SVS by itself was a great improvement (much tighter than previous sub) but then EQing it makes for a really good result...
Could someone give an explanation of what is meant exactly by 'losing headroom' when you boost a frequency using the BFD. I assume that a boost is achieved essentially by applying a corresponding cut to all frequencies outside the filter. So to compensate, you would have to boost the 'overall'...
Rick I don't remember if you said you had used the demo version of ETT or not. If not, I strongly recommend it if money is tight for the purchase. I did buy it the other night, primarily for convenience - overlays, etc. But I think you could do fine with the demo. I'm sure it would beat the...
Having just completed a multi-day round of familiarization, experimenting, and finally getting my system set up using ETF and BFD, my answer to the question posed in the title of this thread is ABSOLUTELY. Regarding cost - I did purchase ETF, but had already made significant progress using the...
I really suggest you check out the first post in the thread Step by Step Sub Equalization using BFD and ETF, and the linked article. Jon M has done a tremendous job of explaining all this. The direct link to the article is below.

The corrections suggested above are worthwhile, but I really have to say BRAVO to your initial effort. I just got my BFD last night, after having found your article in the afternoon, and it was IMMENSELY (sorry for all the caps but . . . ) helpful.
Thanks very much for taking the time...
Ken and Bruce,
Thanks for the info so far.
Regarding the use of ETF to measure response from the mains and sub separately in order to set crossover - is there still merit to this since I can't adjust the crossover with my reciever? The sub amp does have a variable crossover, but I had just...
Let me clarify this a bit Jeremy - I easily achieve 80db with the 'regular' (5 channels) speakers - these are Home Theater Direct Level III's, which I claim 90 sensitivity. FWIW this is about '55' on the volume setting of the reciever. I have been calibrating to 80db w/ Avia.
The problem is...
Thanks for the quick answer Ken.
I definitely want to use the RTA method - not the sine wave; measure; graph method - so I'll rig up the PC to HT connection.
Re your comment about 'integrating the sub'
My reciever definitely engages the sub in CD mode - I have my DVD player connected via...
I hope I don't pollute this informative thread with too-dumb questions regarding ETF, but I get my BFD tomorrow and want to be as ready as possible.
First dumb question - is is A) necessary, or just B) desirable to use ETF with its own test tone run through my HT system? Or would one of the...
I'm getting some weird results calibrating my new sub (SVS25-31cs) driven by PartsExpress 250W amp. This is in 6500 ft^3 room. Using the Avia sub balancing tones, with both reciever and amp volume maxed out, I can't get the sub to match the speaker level (speaker at 80 db) - its down about 3...
I have to chime in that I have the exact same experience with my Onkyo 696 that Jason describes. I have matched levels between any/all speakers and the sub, but on the 6 channel scan there is a pronounced subjective volume difference (I can't remember if I also measured it - I think so) for...
I have a set of ADS L1290's, big tower speakers, with blown tweeters that can't be replaced (at least not with original equipment). What do you all do with old equipment like this - turn the nice walnut cabinets into planters?
It really seems a shame to take them to the landfill.
Thanks for the responses people. I've made one decision so far (SVS - YES!) and still have a few details to sort out. I just started a new thread 'SETTLED - I need SVS (which one) and an EQ !! Maybe new speakers too ?' in an effort to get to the bottom of these weighty questions :).
Ron I...
Based on extensive and purely scientific research on this forum, I've decided I need to replace my HTD Subwoofer with an SVS, and I need an EQ to tame some peaks and valleys in my room.
As far as EQ, it looks like the Behringer DSP1100 Feedback Destroyer ($129) based on several...
SVS is certainly popular here and seems to be the one to get. Is it particularly biased toward HT, or is it also good for music (rock, blues). What factors if any are there in favor of the HSU?
It will be used in system based on Onkyo 696 with HTD Level III bookshelf speakers, in a large...
Thanks for the replies. I looked up the Behringer website and don't see any mention of a 'BFD 1124P'. Could you clarify? Or a general 'spec' in terms of number of bands, etc would be useful.
I've been dissappointed with the sloppy bass of my new HT system, especially for music. System consists of:
Onkyo TS-DX696 reciever
Sony DVP-NC600 DVD player (relatively low end - $230)
HTD Level III 5.1 speaker system (not towers)
This is in a large room (6500 ft^3)(20x25) with...
Thanks for the responses so far. The consensus from this and other similar threads seems to be that room response is the likely culprit, as opposed to a fundamental problem with the HTD subwoofer. With this in mind, it would seem that investing in an EQ would be a better investment than...
I've had my new system for about 2 weeks now and am really having a problem with the bass 'sound' for music listening. System consists of:
Onkyo TS-DX696 reciever
Sony DVP-NC600 DVD player (relatively low end - $230)
HTD Level III 5.1 speaker system (not towers)
This is in a large...
