RobD, thanks for the compliment. However I should confess that I only got into the dts ld scene around March I think. Still a newbie. :)

For true dts expertise and unbiased thoughts, check with greg_t, David Norman, (Dan Hitchman-certifiable dts addict! :D ). There are many others in the "DTS Laserdisc" thread that can answer your question with more authority than I could. I really don't know about the bit rates. I just know I really like what I hear. :)

Good Luck!

Does anyone have an answer to Matt Stone's original second question as to where to find DTS LD's other then eBay. Perhaps someone could suggest small Mom and Pop shops anywhere? There used to be one in the SF Bay area here, not sure it's still around.

www.bigemma.com , as for mom and pop stores, the only one's i know of here in the UK would be www.pictureparadise.co.uk , http://www.thevideodrome.com/ and www.moviebulevard.co.uk . They only sometimes get in some DTS discs. Other places would be www.the-cinema-store.com/ and SRS Laserworld in London, they dont have a website but their phone no is 0207 287 2456 again it would be hit or miss weather they have any in or not.

I always check out used outlets like record stores, I have found several DTS lds that, some were even sealed. According to DTS online there were 112 titles released of which I have all after much searching and much less money in my pocket. To me DTS lds still have some of the best sounding tracks of any format.
Good luck to all in your search for DTS lds.

David Norman told me about www.rodisc.nl as well...my question, how do you go about buying things from there. Only being able to speak english seems to hinder my ability to figure anything out on the site :)

DTS LD Site

Blaine has a lot of information on his site explaining DTS.
If I'm not mistaken, the bitrate is 1280 kb/s of 20bit 5.1 data (up to 5 channels of full range discrete plus a limited freq bass only channel). Compressed and encoded, it takes a special decoder to get proper sound. I think LD max bitrate is around 1440 kb/sec, but the DTS tracks don't quite use it all. I've seen 1234 kb listee as well, but it is slightly less than the full Linear PCM rate apparently to lessen the chances of damaging non DTS equipped systems if they attempted to play the digital tracks (sounds like loud white noise).

The PCM digital tracks contain basically uncompressed 2 channels of information. The best you can do non-discrete surround sound derived from those 2 channels.

There are a few discs to watch out for that are listed as having DTS Stereo Surround which have normal PCM tracks and can be played on any Surround equipped system and is basically equal to Dolby Surround. These are not the same as the special DTS Digital with 5.1 Discrete Channels.
The Mask, Speechless, Freddie's New Nightmare, Tank Girl, Blown Away among others -- Mask and Blown Away also have a DTS Digital LD.

Over the years I heard and read various bitrates in that same range. 1234/1235/1280 out of the Linear PCM 1411/1440 range (freq listed 1.4MB/s).

The exact numbers are a mystery to me on either end and I use it more as a general ballpark idea.

RobD, which 2 discs are you looking for?

Finally got my Frighteners DTS LD. Nothing short of spectacular.

Maybe interesting to know that I also did some comparing between DTS LD and DVD. On paper the DTS DVD's had a higher bitrate 1536 Kbps(1235 Kbps LD). I tested Daylight and Dante's Peak. The same conclusions when I tested the SPR DTS DVD against the DD LD. The DVD's seem to have extended highs in the upper frequency range, but were lacking in the midrange and low end. The DTS LD's sounded harmonically fuller. Another conformation for myself to hold on to the LD's.
