With a button, the phase is shifted 180 degrees. Rarely does that help. A good receiver has a distance or delay setting which is a continuously variable phase setting in reality. As part of my receiver's MCACC setup, it sends pops to the sub and measures how long they take to get to the mic that is positioned in my seat. From there it adjust the distance/delay/phase correctly.
