Last week our local pub had a special event with Founders, a microbrewery based in Grand Rapids, MI. They brought in several special brews, including their Kentucky Breakfast Stout (aka KBS). This stout is fermented in bourbon barrels, and is quite sought after. It was unusual, but quite tasty. I also really liked their Imperial Stout -- 10.2% alcohol content!

Had a crowd at my uncle's last night.

Bought a 6-pack of Samuel Smith's chocolate stout and 2 bottles each of Peche and Framboise Lambic.

Mixed the stout in with the two lambic in separate pitchers.

Damn it was good.

Yup. My cousin brought a couple bottles over a few months ago -- it's his favorite. That stuff knocked me on my butt that night!

I'm in an interesting position here. I live in a little Bavarian town about 40 miles SE of Munich (so yes, Oktoberfest every year, not to mention the smaller, much better ones locally). I have a HUGE selection of German/regional/local/VERY local beers at hand, but it's difficult to get any NON-regional beers. You can get a few from Italy/Holland/Britain/etc, but forget about any countries outside Europe.

Still, look at what I have at my disposal? Probably 40 different breweries in the local 30km radius, many of them making a Helles (lager), Weissbier (wheat beer), Hefe-Weissbier (wheat with yeast), Dunkel-Weissbier (dark wheat), Dunkel, Pils, spring brews, fall fest brews, winter brews, etc. All cheap (an average case of 20-.5 liter bottles costs about $12, inlcluding about 3 in deposit, which you get back). So I'm paying about .50-60 cents a bottle for stuff like Paulaner, Spaten, Franziskaner, Hofbrau, etc. Doesn't get much better than that.

Some of my favorite regional beers are made by:

Floetzinger - I think they only make 1 export, a lager. Their 1543 Hefe-Weissbier is a food of the gods.

Ayinger - Many beers exported. Their Celebrator is one of the finest beers EVER.

Franziskaner - The Weissbier 'division' of Spaten. A consistently good wheat beer.

Eine Bayern Halbe - Very regional. They make a wonderfully tasty Helles.

Oettinger - Very nice, well-rounded beers.

Schweinsbrau - They make two beers in Hermannsdorf, an extrememly nutty dark Weissbier and a smooth, unfiltered Helles, each made with wholly organic ingredients.

Unionsbrau - It's a small brewery in a cellar in Munich that makes only a delicious, smooth, creamy, wonderful unfiltered Helles. Very cool place if your a beer fan and in Munich.

Of course, I have scarcely met a beer I didn't like.

Speaking of growlers (called Siphon in German), I have 2-2 liter ones, from Unionsbrau and Airbrau, another great brewery in the Munich airport. They kick ass.

I need to print this out for my next trip to Munich!

Sometimes, the establishment where you get and drink the beer can enhance the experience. Last weekend we were on Mackinac Island, and I enjoyed a locally brewed stout at one of the popular watering holes.

My wife bought me this shirt while we were on the island.

Actually, the establishment, not the beer, is named the Pink Pony. It's a very popular bar and restaurant on Mackinac Island. I think the stout was from Atwater Brewery - - I had a variety of different stouts at various local pubs during the four day visit . There are no cars allowed on the island, so we just had to walk back to our hotel.

Well, I would issue a warning on Not Your Father's Root Beer, if you have a sweet tooth you will dig it. If you actually wanted a beer...this ain't it. It is much more root beer than beer as it is loaded with sugar and tastes like an actual root beer. So, if you are in the mood for a root beer then by all means try this. If you want an actual beer go in a much different direction.

That's not at all to say it is bad but I thought I was drinking soda pop when I drank it...and honestly I'm no fan of pop.

I Googled this stuff today...

More "malt beverage" than beer (it has the words ale and beer on the label).

Produced by(or with money from) the idio, I mean folks, that brought us FourLoko.

Pabst is handling distro...

Whatever.

Stuff is tasty. (those that live around Indy and are familiar with Mug 'n Bun daily made root beer...this is close)

Well, once in a blue moon I drink a root beer and I would substitute a Not Your Father's for that once every 3 or 4 years root beer. I just think people should know what they are getting into if they try one. My take on it is it tastes just like actual root beer but with practically no carbonation...so basically like drinking a flat root beer. I would say root beer fans will love it but beer fans might enjoy one as a novelty.

I did not try this but was told not too...being that it so close to a root beer many people have dumped a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it and I guess everything sort of separates when you do this and it gets pretty gross. So drink it straight up and don't try the root beer float thing with it.

Speaking of "with ice cream"...

Lack of carbonation kills the float...

Nothing stops you from using a blender.

My fav "with ice cream"...

Equal parts...

Baja Rosa (less sweet than Tequila Rose)
Godiva chocolate liquor of choice
Vanilla bean(good vanilla...not cheap vanilla, needs to hold up) ice cream.

Ended up getting some Not Your Father's Root Beer. It was absolutely delicious! Tasted like a spiced root beer with a hint of beer flavor. Thanks for the recommendation schan! Going to have to pick some more up!

It seems to be the way things are going now, but these super high alcohol content beers kind of ruin the experience.

Beer never used to be that loaded, but now, everything seems to be heading into double digit territory.
