I watched this Wednesday evening, Hard to believe that I was watching such an old film. My favorite version of the Titanic story. So glad this has the Robert Harris seal of approval. :D
I was amazed at how excellent this film looked.

Is this a 4K scan ??
I would have to check, but I would presume it to be 2k.
Even if scanned in 4, there is no reason to process in 4 for HD. 4 only needs to come into play if a film is being preserved to go back to film or for a high quality DCP.

With the 100th anniversary of the 1913 sinking of the Titanic fast approaching, ITV was keen for the 1958 British film A Night to Remember, a docudrama about the disaster, to be restored in pristine condition in anticipation of the films broadcast on ITV HD and an anticipated Blu-ray release.
The difference with this restoration was that we were able to scan the original negative which gave us the best possible start,” says Deluxe 142’s Paul Collard.
Scanned on Arri to 2K DPX files, the film was then ingested into Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve for grading, removing light dust with automated passes. “Using DaVinci rather than MTI as this stage saves time,” he explains “there was a lot of dirt to be removed, particularly at the beginning and end of the reels,” adds Collard.
Finally the material was worked on in MTI, with physical tears in the frames fixed on Diamant, before review on a big screen. On a Night to Remember, shot by cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth, there are two important features – both associated with the film’s maritime location – which needed to be taken into consideration, adds Collard. “First, dancing highlights on water meant that you couldn’t automate restoration on these sections of the film because the highlights might be identified as dust and removed. Second, use of the automated stabilisation tools would be an issue on sections of the film featuring lifeboats because they would attempt to correct the natural rolling of the boats. Image Systems’ Relativity and Clarity were used to soften the grain build up, which you inevitably get when you go from first to third generation film stock,” adds Collard.
The restored movie was filmed back out to 35mm printed at Deluxe’s own labs, with HDCAM SR master fir Blu – Ray and the digital cinema package for a screening in Cannes.

Here is a 6 minute clip about the restoration:

Thank you. Most interesting. i remember very clearly seeing the film when first released. It was a big "event" film in Britain with long queues to get into the cinema.

I jumped on this as soon as I read that it was available for pre-order.
This has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it over 45 years ago.
An excellent film, and an excellent release.

For anyone interested in the NYC metro area, A Night To Remember will be showing this coming Saturday, April 28 at the Loews Jersey in Jersey City, NJ at 6PM. The Loews Jersey is an old time movie palace under renovation.
Its on a double bill with The Poseidon Adventure. A disaster at sea double feature.
See you there.

I wish more theaters would be creative like this in their programming. That will be a awesome double flick.

It KILLS me to say that I have a commitment that whole day and evening. Worse, I have yet to get to the Loews Jersey for anything at all. Damn!!
