So I just got some Def Tech ProMonitor 1000's for my rears and needed some help with the height. Unfortunately my HT room isn't huge so they won't be able to be positioned too far behind the audience. For that reason, I thought it might be better to have them a little higher and tilted downward and not right at ear level.

Thoughts? Thanks!

By the way, I will have a run of speaker wire of 30 feet or so. Any guage wire or brand reccomendations? Thank you.

I think surrounds should always be at least a couple feet above ear level anyway. You might try bouncing the sound off the top rear corners.
