Ok, my brother ran the VSO on his computer for the five affected discs and three of them shared the same Media #. The other two also had the same Media #, but a different one from the first three. By contrast, he ran six other SONY CHOICE COLLECTION DVD-Rs that I own and have had for awhile and they had different numbers from the defective discs. .

Can he run the Scan Function (should be the 3rd Tab) on at least one of the defective discs? Not sure if your brother's player is capable

Sorry, I'm a little confused by your questions. Did you miss my original post from earlier today? I am referring to commercially released MOD DVD-Rs from SONY, not retail blank discs. I do not know when these were manufactured nor what brand SONY uses for their commercial releases. As for when I purchased them, just in the last three weeks.

You listed two mid codes in your previous post. Those particular two codes were already known in the blank discs market. (Assuming they're not forgeries from china).

So whoever Sony outsourced these dvd-mod titles to, appears to have used TDK and Verbatim blank dvdr discs to make these Sony dvd-mod titles you currently have. (Assuming they're legit and not illegal bootlegs).

These certainly appear to be originals, though I know the packaging of bootlegs from China can look nearly identical to originals, so that may not be any indication. However, I'm skeptical that anyone could profit from boots of these particular movies. Boots could definitely explain why they aren't readable, but it just seems too far fetched for such esoteric titles.

That's interesting about the blank media being TDK and Verbatim as I always wondered what the studios used burning these MODs. It's such a shame to have encountered this after collecting many of the MODs from all the major studios. I can only hope it's an isolated batch made just recently. Perhaps Sony Tech can explain more if and when they contact me.

I didn't know newer PC BD drives weren't capable of what my 2011-2015 era drives could do -- I have a dozen or more (BD-R/RW not all attached to computers currently) from LG, LITEON, Plextor, Pioneer that can. Actually seems odd that they can't since most were designed to be used as multifunction devices, not just playing discs like a standalone.

I took a closer look at what vso inspector actually does. What it calls a "scan" abilitiy, looks like all it does is just check how many times it has to do re-reads on particular sectors. It doesn't actually do pipo quality testing type stuff, which is what "scanning" is refered to by the hardcore optical drive/disc enthusiasts (such as on website forums like myce).

Pipo quality "scanning" type testing is much more precise, which only current LiteOn dvd drives and that vinpower special bluray-r drive model can do, which are both still being manufactured and on the market.

Judging by the few responses I got here to my dilemma, I’m assuming it was not of great interest so I will briefly update the situation and then bow out of this thread.

I got bounced around from one SONY corporate entity to another in trying to get some answers regarding the defective SONY MOD DVDs I had. It finally ended at SONY PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT when someone at SONY ELECTRONICS, whom SONY PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT had previously referred me to, provided me with a customer service email address. Their replies to my emails kept getting stranger and stranger, consistently asking me questions that my earlier emails had already answered. I got the impression that the problem wasn’t just a lack of English speaking skills, but a lack of any speaking skills in any form of communication used on this planet. Finally, they just stopped responding altogether.

All the DVDs are being returned to where I purchased them for full refunds. I will not be buying anymore titles in the SONY CHOICE COLLECTION.

My question is, are they still releasing titles. I haven’t seen one in a couple or three years.

As best as I can tell the CHOICE line (DVD and BD) ended in late 2017. Wind was the last Bluray (about 25 total titles ever were produced though about a dozen many wish would be re-released as BD) and Indian Uprising the last DVD

The Bluray MOD lineup switched to Pressed BD in mid 2018 with Sleepless in Seattle.

Early 2019 a new line of DVD listed under Sony Picture Classics are listed in teh SONY MOD program, but I'm not 100% sure if those are DVDR though I think so. There are only about 8 of these and several of them have an equivalent BD
