***Official 24th Annual HTF October Scary Movie Challenge 2023***

1. Watch 13 Scary/Horror/Halloween-Themed films, etc. from midnight October 1, 2022 through October 31, 2023 (use your own time zone to set the ending time).

2. Theatrically released films and short features count as 1 point each. Running times are irrelevant. TV specials (e.g. "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!") and individual episodes of anthology TV series (e.g. "The Twilight Zone") also count as 1 point each. For episodic TV series, 2 hour-long episodes (e.g. "The Walking Dead") count as 1 point and 3 episodes of 30 minute-long episodes (e.g. "The Munsters") count as 1 point.

3. Two of the 13 films, et. al. must be new discoveries, movies you've never seen before. The point of this is to see those few movies you've always meant to see, but never got around to. Please specify new discoveries in your film list by making them bold, adding asterisks, different colors, etc.

4. Come here and talk about 'em.

5. There is an uber-category, the Ultimate Splatter Challenge for those who wish to put all of the rest of us to shame. This is the heavyweight division. These people, if they choose to accept the challenge, must view 31 horror/scary/Halloween themed movies before dawn on Nov. 1st. Ten new discoveries are recommended for this one. The rest of us will bow down in awed reverence to these truly "Splatterific" HTF members. The bragging rights will be awesome and long lived. What movies qualify? If you wanna include it, go for it. There will be no hairsplitting. If The Wizard of Oz sends you to the dresser for a fresh pair of boxer shorts, all the power.

6. At the end of the challenge, the totals will be added up based on the point system outlined in number 2 above.

I may try and start off with the recent Halloween trilogy. I've watched 2018's Halloween a couple times, but have never watched the final two films though both discs have been in my collection for a loooong time.

Not to lecture, but I would like to make this a point of emphasis. Part of the fun of this challenge is reading about other opinions/reviews of films and possibly discovering something new you want to watch. We have a few that seem to just post lists of titles or pictures without any discussion. That doesn't tell us anything about what you thought about what you've watched and doesn't help anyone potentially discover something "new".

I may try and start off with the recent Halloween trilogy. I've watched 2018's Halloween a couple times, but have never watched the final two films though both discs have been in my collection for a loooong time.

I just did the new Halloween trilogy re-watch a few weeks ago. I get in the Halloween spirit in August. Every. Dang. Year. Like clockwork.

Like you, I had seen the 2018 flick a few times. I saw Halloween Kills twice before. But I only had seen Ends the one time last year at release. I enjoyed them all. Like I said in the Halloween thread earlier - I just love this franchise. I'm sure I'll watch a few in the coming month.

My 2 oldest granddaughters came over night before last and reminded me that I said they could come over and watch horror movies with me (like I'd actually forget that...). I reminded *them* that *I* select all movies but would take requests into consideration.

Of course I'll watch whatever they want - after all, I'm the one who pretty much indoctrinated them into horror with the Classic Universal Horror films - and they've made a point to say *those* are some they absolutely want to watch.

I *did* bring up that I have several (almost 100) new and/or BR upgrades for DVDs I own and would be giving those priority (within reason as they are 12 & 16 so I'll exclude some).

One upgrade is the Norwegian "found footage" film Troll Hunter, one of the few films of that sub-genre I actually enjoy and think they'll really like. I told them about it and warned them that I watch foreign films with original language tracks w/subtitles.

The Norwegians like their trolls. There's also Troll (2022) on Netflix that I watched a while back. It was pretty good and I don't recall anything too intense, though the parents guide at IMDb has details. I think one person is eaten and there's one F-word.
