Found these paradigm pdr-10's

Now I just have to make a very tough decision.

So with the stuff I've found...what would you do? I want a great receiver that I can always add on to. So should I just get a good set of these bookshelf speakers you guys are recommending and get everything else later?

OR....?

7.1 system you recommended. Only 16 hrs left! Onkyo HT-S790 Black 7.1 Home Theather System

This 7.1 looks great but I'm leaning towards bookshelf speakers for now

3 years or so later i am still using a system of 4 atoms and two paradigm focus', coupled with a sr 502. it is a very capable, value packed group in my opinion. My first stereo was an onkyo HTIB that i sold to my younger brother after about 2 years. It is nice if movies are your only concern, but with music it just didnt cut it. I am always under the impression its better to buy only once, even if the product is a little more than you originally thought you wanted to spend. Since i am still using that paradigm set up, i with i would of put the 300 bucks that i dumped on that HTIB towards my current set up.

FYI: The Onkyo 503 is very similar to the AVR you get with the 790 HTiB. It may even be the exact same AVR.

Good advice and recommendations you've been given. Tough decision.

Yeah, ur telling me! I was liking the 7.1 system that was recommended then I realized I had absolutely no where to set the speakers for placement or run the wire. So bookshelf it's going to be for now. Now I just need to pick the right bookshelves and the right receiver. Onkyo or Yamaha are looking good.

I think just getting bookshelfs is a good idea for now. You'll be able to upgrade to higher end speakers later when you move out of the dorms.

As far as your decision between an onkyo or yamaha reciever - that is tough. They are both great brands. I tried to find some specs on the yamaha reciever you were referring to, but couldn't find the link in your previous posts. Could you provide it agian so that we could help you make a side by side comparison?

Thanks

OK i know that's a lot of speaker choices, but I seriously have no idea what to get. The reviews on the athena's are looking to be the best. So I think I'll get them but please take a sec and look through some of this stuff if it looks familiar to you and you've heard them before.....thx again

You can get the Polk R150 bookshelf speakers from Fry's for $49.99 a pair. That's a great price. I bought some, but I'm waiting on a receiver so I haven't heard them.

Timmy,

I almost forgot to mention a set of speakers that I am a HUGE fan of. The Yamaha NS-777's. They are a set of floor standing loudspeakers with a really nice piano black finish. I got a chance to listen to them when Best Buy was carrying them about a year and a half / 2 years ago. They are discontinued now, so they are a bit cheaper than their already cheap brand new price of $400 a pair. (looks like you could get them for around $150 for the pair now)

Check them out.

Again,

I've heard them and was very excited about them. I think they are a great value for what you would be getting.

Actually, I might have to get a pair now that I'm looking at them again.

Regarding the amps - personally, without being able to listen to them in person, I would disregard the Onkyo off the bat as I don't know that it is offering enough power. I know their are other things you should look for besides just wattage, and I'd be curious to know if any other members - perhaps MaxL - know anything about the specs on that Onkyo that would lead them to think that it should get your vote.

I think my onkyo 502 is rated at 55 watts per channel. I have found it plenty to drive a 6 speaker paradigm set up. many companies play with numbers to produce a spec sheet that looks a lot better on paper than it sounds in person.

Ok well I guess that receiver is out of the question. These yamaha's look impressive, and you guys think they'd be better than the Athena's? Looks like these could hit all the freqs well.

Got me all excited and then I noticed those prices, along with the ones on ebay are for "each" speaker. Dang...

OH NO!!!

- I apologize for the confusion. I honestly thought the prices were only $150 for the pair on the advertisements I saw. Sorry to get your hopes up man. I'll do some better proof reading next time.

Ok I finally decided to get the Ahtena's b1.2 MAXL recommended. All the other speakers looked great but he was right. For the price I can't go wrong. All the reviewers loved them. I can always get towers later when i get a big place and put the athena's in the back

Please someone help me find a receiver!
-100-150ish $
-5.1 or higher
-aux input for laptop and ipod
-input for my 360 which will also be my dvd player
-input for whatever flat screen I decide to buy

Thx guys, you've helped out a lot already....I'm almost there please recommend something as you can see I take a long time to decide on something. It took me 2 years to find the perfect car.

Oh BTW do I want an A/V receiver?

This one?
