I always interpreted the scene as Han taking Greedo --and the audience-- by surprise, with a blast that nobody sees coming. You're sort of meant to be confused--- for a second (a "what the %&*$?!" moment), then when the smoke clears and Greedo's body is slumped over the table.....well, you'd really have to be thick not to understand what just happened.
