Have you read the back of the cover? It says 4x3 1.33. For a 1956 film? Sounds like a full frame transfer to me. Plus there's the annoying habit the French have of unremovable French subtitles!

Did you check IMDB for the original specs? Not all films in the 1950s were in CinemaScope (which cost bucks for the lens, lighting, etc). 1:37:1 was still common.

Alas, the IMDb is notorious for its inaccuracies. It took several attempts by me before they eliminated Eve Arden from the cast of Butterfield 8! With all due respect, 1.37 was not common in 1956 as HTF's resident expert Bob Furmanek will confirm. That it was shot in 1.37 is not in dispute. What is in dispute is that it was intended to be shown theatricaly 1.37 in 1956 instead of 1.66 or 1.85 depending on the projection.

AFI has confirmed Attack was filmed in 1:85 ratio.

If a film was shot in spherical, I'm happy to get a disc that preserves the whole frame,and lets me crop it. Granted, films' directors may wish a home video release to crop specifically, e.g. Wong Kar-Wai s request for the Criterion release of CHUNGKING EXPRESS.

The problem is, most 4:3 transfers aren't fully open-matte. They're usually a little bit opened up on the top and bottom and a little bit cropped on the sides, the specific proportions often varying from shot to shot.
