I've got a Klipsch KSW-200 from a few years back and I was wondering if swapping the stock driver for say, a Shiva, would make a good improvement in sound.
Keep in mind that I come from the guitar world, where we swap speakers in amps all the time :)

Well, it may be louder than the Klipsch driver. But that enclosure is way too small, underported and tuned too high for a Shiva. At a minimum a Shiva should have an 85L enclosure tuned to 22hz with a flared 3" port. Preferably a 140L enclosured tuned to 18-20hz with a flared 4" port.

A sub driver has to be mated to an enclosure that properly matches it's T/S specs. Especially for ported enclosures.

thanks Dustin for the info. I've been reading a lot the past few days about sub theory. I think I'm gonna try building a Sonosub next month.

Dustin, how do you calculate the enclosure with the T/S numbers once you have them? Do you know of a website that might explain it all?

My understanding isn't great, it's good enough to get me by with some help from the more knowledgable in the DIY advanced section. I've got a good grasp of port/PR and tuning, Vd and Vas. But the mechanical and electrical Q values still have me miffed, I know what the desirable summed Q is, but how all the different Q's relate got me.
My numbers for the Shiva came straight out of the vented application notes from Adire. The main point being the enclosure proposed for the Shiva is far from idea and that Drivers have to be matched to enclosures. Doing that takes a resonable amount of knowledge.
But anyways, to you question here's a link on T/S specs and two more on different enclosure types:
