Hitachi is coming out this fall with their new HDTV sets and they apparently display 540P and 1080i natively. I understand 1080i but why 540P? Are not all DVD players only providing P-Scan up to 480P? Even if HD-DVD arrives next year I understand it will be 720P anyways as 540P is only SDTV....so then what will take advantage of the 540P format?

Nothing will take advantage of 540p. It is really just a sales gimmick, IMO.
525p which you see in the specs on other new equipment is actually the standard resolution BUT only 485 lines are active (in the viewing area), hence 480p. The 1080i standard for HDTV actually produces around 1120 lines but only 1080 are active. So 525p and 480p are one and the same. 540p as stated by Hitachi must mean they have 15 more inactive lines. The standard DVD format is 480p and it won't be changing anytime soon.
Confused?! Me to, sounds like the manufacturers are trying to take advantage of many consumers lack of knowledge regarding digital tv and HD.

It also occurred to me that (coincidence or not?) 540p is 1080 divided by 2! Probably is a sales gimmick, Hitachi can claim HDTV is twice the resolution, making it much easier for the unsuspecting consumer to understand.

540P and 1080i are exactly the same scan rate. So if a TV can accept 1080i, it will accept 540p.
