What's available for a "starter" HDTV? (1 Viewer)

Is it a mistake to spend $1800 on a set? How much time should I anticipate waiting before I see any sets around $1000 to $1500? I can't see paying $4000 for a T.V. I'll basically be using it for my XBox.

Any suggestions would be extremely valued.

For XBox only (and on the cheap), I'd say use a computer monitor and a component->VGA transcoder.
