What's "automatic aspect ratio detection" on Toshiba model LCDs? (1 Viewer)

This feature is listed on quite a few of Toshiba's LCDs. What is it and how does it work? Does the TV actually recognize the different between 1.33, 1.37, 1.66, 1.78, 1.85, 2.35, etc.? and display them properly? What happens with non-anamorphic DVDs?

I have a Toshiba 72" DLP. This feature changes the picture mode based on the type of input signal Here is a link to my manual which has a description on page 79.

I'm assuming the feature is the same for the LCD sets.
