What to look for in a receiver (1 Viewer)

My home theater room is connected to another, but is seperated by a curtain. Both rooms are about 12x10. Soon I will be putting in-wall speakers in the room my home theater is in. The room on the other side of the curtain will also be wired for speakers, though I won't be putting them in for a while as I have many costs ahead of me, but I do want to plan for the future. I know a little about receivers, but nothing really about how to set them up with multi-room speakers. What do I look for in a receiver as far as audio inputs/outputs? Can someone enlighten me please. Type slow, I am a newbie.

Can both sets of speakers be played at the same time, or is there addition hardware I can buy?
