For me, the trouser-flapping rumble of an explosion or the directioonal screech of a super-loud bullet have never much floated my Home-Theater boat (although I have to admit they're both quite cool). The moment I get a little thrill from watching a flick on my HT equipment, is in the quiet scenes, when the ambient hum of background traffic, or the bustle and chatter of a coffee shop, or a beautifully orchestrated score fills the speakers, and my head turns, to seek out the source of the sounds. The sheer joy of a brilliantly mixed track, that creates a sound environment all over the room is bliss.

What do you love most about films, seen through an HT?

I certainly enjoy the audio impact of HT. However, when I see a pristine video transfer of an older film this easily excites me the most. I am often floored and left thinking to myself: This film is old. How can it possibly look that fresh? :D

The whole aspect of HT excites me the most, but second to that is the BIG picture.
At first, I loved the audio with the BIG sound. But, once I landed the 16:9 RPTV and had it ISF'd, man I fell in love with the video side.
Peace Out~:D

I enjoy getting lost in the movie plain and simple. I find it easier if you can more closely approximate the theater experience;)
Take care,
Chuck

Well for me it's turning off the outside world for a while and falling into the movie.

The sound got me going first, but with HDTV and progressive scan. The picture is quite moving.

For me, it's all about the movies.

I don't have the best HT setup at the moment, but to me that's all just tools and equipment to bring the movie to me.

To present an anaology, when someone builds a house, they revere the house, not the hammer they used to build it.

Gotta agree with RAIN. Before DVD I only had a really nice TV and NEVER purchased VCR tapes.

Then my( evil lol)parents gave me a Sony DVD player for christmas. WOW - it was an eye opener. I then HAD to get a surround sound system.

I know own 20 DVD's and can't stop watching movies. The hole experience is electric.

Not having to deal with the crowds, sticky floors, prices, etc. of going to the movies...Having a much wider selection...Control of the sound, when to watch it, being able to pause when I need to relieve myself, and all the extras that DVD offers are all great pluses.

The fact that, for the first time in history, we can now legitimately say that we own de facto copies of the films we love so much.

Some perspective: I used to co-own a 16mm CinemaScope print of 2001: A Space Odyssey in the early '70s. Some friends and I managed to locate a grey-market source that led us to an MGM lab print.

We owned a major film before the age of video.

Then "video" came along, and we were not impressed. We had a genuine film.

Then laserdisc came and went. And now we have DVD.

The new DVD of 2001 is far superior to that 16mm 'Scope print of the film I used to own, which had an optical mono soundtrack, and the frame cropped slightly at the top and bottom--and some color errors.

Home theater is just that: bringing the magic of cinema into the home. And you never want to go out!

Ditto to everything mentioned above. However, what I enjoy most about my HT is entertaining my friends. I also enjoy turning them on to getting thier own set up, and helping them shop.

A close friend of mine is expecting a substantial settlement in a month or so. He wants to get his first HDTV. I'm probably more excited than him.

Image/audio quality and selection.

The fact that I can watch gems like Lawrence of Arabia, North By Northwest, and City Lights in the comfort of my own house makes me happy.

I love to crank up the volume. Particularly during the trailers for action movies. I borrowed "A Perfect Storm" from a friend. Although I didn't like the movie, I did crank up the trailer to rattle the house... I must have watched it 50 times.. gave me goosebumps every time.

Amen, Rainman. I have a nice (but not amazing) TV and a somewhat unimpressive DVD player, but guess what? I have a collection of movies that I absolutely adore.
I watched Airplane! last night! I've seen it maybe 8 times already. Why'd I watch it? Because I can!
DVD is my choice because it offers my one true passion (quite simply, movies) in the proper fashion. I've ALWAYS been a massive movie nut, yet my VHS collection was never something that made me proud.
My DVD collection? That's my pride and joy.

I love it for the same reason as I did when I had a VHS collection. It was to experience those beloved movies whenever it struck me to. The move to 5.1 and 16:9 just enhanced the feeling, but sticking in a favorite movie brings a smile to my face.

The audio can really be a big winner, especially hearing those studio logos come out crystal clear and as larger-than-life as they do from a quality theater. That's wonderful.

at first I thought it was the pause, zoom and multi-angle for porn but then I realized that it is the pleasure of being able to sit in a comfortable chair, with whatever snacks I want, watching whatever movie I want without having to worry about the guy behind me kicking my seat, the person next to me with the small bladder, the crying kids, the idiots that like to throw popcorn around and in the last few years, no laser pointers dancing around on the screen.

I agree with many here...so, for me, it's:

1. movies

2. the sound

3. anamorphic

4. compulsion to buy more!
