Most of the ones I've seen only cost a few hundred bucks. Probably a case of getting what you pay for.

So what kind of care did you lavish on your water heater? What do you claim is the reason for its longevity?

Absolutely nothing. I hooked it up, lit the pilot light and closed the closet door. Every year I check the lines for corrosion but I have never done any kind of maintenance on it. Never knew I was supposed to.

The good tankless water heaters will set you back at least $1000 bucks (at least they would several years ago when I looked into them).
