Volume control while using pre-out? (1 Viewer)

If I take the pre-out on one receiver for a few channels (like the surrounds), and feed it into the pre-amp input stage on another receiver, what's the deal with setting the volume?

Will the volume of the 2nd (surrounds) receiver work independently of
the main receiver?
