I'm thinking of buying this set and I read the description on the Toshiba site. This is the web site's description of the vertical compression mode: "16:9 Mode (full 1080i Vertical Compression) allows the consumer to display a 16:9 HD source (full 1080i) on their 4:3 HD Compatible television. This mode will create black bars at the top and bottom of the screen."
Does this mean it only squeezes true high def (1080i) sources or that it upconverts material to 1080i when used?

People have said that the new Panasonics only sqeeze 1080i sources so I thought Toshiba may have adopted the same practice. I definately want a set that performs the squeeze for dvd's. Thanks a lot.

It does do the squeeze for DVD's. I might be mistaken, but I think it will do the squeeze for anything you want. Even stuff that shouldn't be squeezed.
