Hi,

I will be looking for a new 36 inch tv in the future. I like the Toshiba line, 36af61 and 36a61. I looked at both sets at Sears and liked both. My question is, what are the advantages of a flat screen besides less glare. I really didn't notice a better picture quality, atleast not that much(not 400 or so dollars worth). Thanks!!

The only other advantage of a flat screen direct view tube I can think of is that the picture is less distorted as seen by viewers sitting way off to the sides.
Flat screen tubes are heavier than convex screen tubes because the convex shape (the arch principle) permits thinner glass given the atmospheric pressure outside versus the vacuum inside.

[bold]Why aren't all TVs flat screen? [/bold]
Flat screen sets have only been out since 1998, with the Sony Wega, it took other manufacturer's until 2000 to come out with their own models. Sony hired two auto glass makers to design their Wega tube and they blew up over a thousand tubes before they got it right. Two years later the other manufacturers figured out how to do it. So the flat screens are a relatively new technology and manufacturers are still having to charge a pretty high price to recoop R&D costs.
