"The slightly sharper image here from the former Blu-ray release is indeed masterful and worthy of acclaim, and the occasional specks and dirt from before are now completely gone. Black levels are also just a tad darker in this transfer..."

Are the comparisons you're making in reference to the Arrow blu-ray release or to the MGM version?

The MGM Blu-ray release from a decade ago.

More and more, we are being treated to the pleasant discovery that Black and White and 4K/UHD are unlocking sharper images that clearly makes for quite the compatible bedfellows. This is key. And it’s good to read that The Apartment has once again been elevated. Kubilick-wise, that is.

Thanks for the review, Matt.:thumbs-up-smiley:

Well, we don't know how much sharper it is than the ARROW release, because Matt's comparing it to the MGM Blu release, at least that's how I think I'm reading it.

Ouch. Just caught Matt’s reply to MovieMan66 (Post #3). I have the Arrow which is quite a beauty. Nonetheless, it was the KL 4K/UHD that Matt had watched and reviewed and to which he gave a 5/5 for image - so we’re heading in the right direction. Fingers crossed.:thumbs-up-smiley:

It's obviously the same transfer Arrow used. That's what Kino does.

I’m sure it looks great. The question for us who own the Arrow though isn’t does it look great, but is it better than the Arrow, which may be the best B&W BD ever. Given that there is no HDR here, it may not be much different at all.

I think others have speculated that it's likely the same transfer. There wouldn't be any sensible reason for MGM to do a new 4K transfer if the one used by Arrow was so special.

Absolutely correct, and is the reason at present I have no interest in this new disc.
