Question is....

Is a U.S. release forthcoming given the fact that this saw an HD-DVD release in the States?

Boy I sure hope that this means one will be coming our way soon. I love this movie and never adopted HDDVD so I still have the cruddy non-anamorphic dvd! Yes I know that it is available 16:9 in other countries, but I am one of the few people that REALLY notices Pal speedup so I can't buy too many pal dvd's. If it's a movie I haven't seen or with no memorable actors I'm fine. However, since I have a really good recall where I can remember lines and the actors voice perfectly, Pal always sounds off. Some movies are worse than others. Two of my worst Pal purchases are Broken Arrow and Six Days Seven Nights. Man Anne Heche sounds crazy irritating with her voice sped up another 4% :)
I have yet to purchase a region free Blu. I really should but this year I decided to get a bigger tv. My wife said we could get one, so I jumped at the opportunity and got a 47 inch 3d tv :) That was my big spend for the year since I also bought another huge spinner cabinet for my collection. I will have to wait for next year to get a region free blu.

There is none of that speedup with Blu-ray that you had with PAL DVDs.

I don't know the technical reasons for it, but you should have no worries.

I've noticed no "PAL DVD speed up" once I bought my first 1080i scaling DVD player back in 2004.

I now have two 1080P: Pio/Elite 49 and a Pio 420.
One 720P: Oppo 970.

Speed up is non existent.

I did buy an "open box" Orei region free BD player that turned out to be defective, getting an exchange. It, while it worked, produced no speed up on DVD either. BD, since it is native 1080P/24 already "everywhere"...there was no speed up.

The Region-Free Blu-ray players have very large memory converters (128 MB) that eliminate speed up problems some people encounter when watching DVD's in PAL. I own several Region-Free Blu-ray/DVD players and many PAL DVD's and have never experienced a speed up problem when viewing the PAL DVD's. As Ron said Blu-ray has a universal standard, there is no PAL, so there is no speed up.

Really...I order more from Amazon UK (and DE, and FR) than I do from the US these days.

I'm in, I've waited a long time for this. Not counting on a North American release for this.

I have the HD DVD, and it looks great. Let's hope Universal doesn't screw this up...

This title was the only reason I was still holding on to my HD-DVD player. A new transfer and feature-length documentary is icing on the cake. Goodbye, HD-DVD player!

Why not? Have you heard something?
No, have not heard anything, I just don't want to wait around for a release that might never come.

I have no inside information on a possible U.S. release, but Universal
seems to be slowly bringing more of their titles that appeared on HD-DVDto the Blu-ray format.

Most recent release was THE JERK, and they used the same master.

So with that in mind, the probability seems very high for a U.S. release
since Universal doesn't have to do anything more than use an existing
HD transfer they already had prepared for the HD-DVD.

BTW, would definitely buy this in a heartbeat. Loved this film. Think I
will wait it out for a few more months.

Here is some additional information...

This is not a Universal release in the U.K.

It is being distributed by Second Sight and there is
an included 80-minute documentary on the disc.

Don't know if we would get the documentary on
a U.S. release.

And, since this not Universal releasing this title, that
sort of dampens the chances of a domestic release.

Of course, this is all speculative.

Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, The Blasters "One Bad Stud," music by Ry Cooder -- how can you go wrong?

But I'll wait for a U.S. release.
Plus Bill Paxton, Rick Moranis, and Lee Ving. And The Blasters doing "Blue Shadows."

You had me at Diane Lane :D

But yes ... this is potentially good news as the specs appear to indicate a re master for sound (DTS HD Master) as well. I'll buy this but will be more than happy to buy a US Blu Ray release when it happens (assuming that the presentation is no worse that what we already on have on HD DVD not that that it is bad!)

I'll settle for something less than an angel!

The plot thickens...

Really tempted to preorder this UK release. Gotta have that documentary...
